Naoichi 'Oninho' Ono arrived in Brazil in 1934 at approximately age 14 alongside his older brother Yasuichi. Despite his tiny size of 121 lbs, he fought the 143-lb, 26-year-old George Gracie for 52 minutes on October 2, 1937, throwing him 20 times before losing by armlock in the sixth round. The audience was 'incredibly impressed with the fighting spirit and technique of the young Japanese judoka.' Together with his brother, their dominance in throwing technique directly caused the evolution of BJJ away from standing techniques and toward ground fighting.
