Marcos Barreto

Marcos “Juruna” Barreto won 1996 World, Pan and Brazilian black-belt roosterweight titles and taught at Monir Salomão’s academy.

Biography

Marcos “Juruna” Barreto is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black-belt competitor and teacher associated with Monir Salomão’s academy, known for his 1996 roosterweight titles at the World, Pan and Brazilian championships. The IBJJF results archive supplies most of this profile’s competition record. Barreto appeared under “Ac. Monir” in the adult black-belt roosterweight results for the 1996 World Championship, where he placed first ahead of Nikos Bahlzetis. He also placed first at that year’s Pan Championship, with Marcelo Andrade second, and at the Campeonato Brasileiro. The IBJJF’s public World results begin in 1996, making Barreto the first listed champion in that archive’s black-belt roosterweight division. Álvaro Bobadilla recounts returning to the Monir Academy as a teenager, where Monir Salomão and Barreto, nicknamed “Juruna,” taught him. After Salomão’s death in 1995, Barreto kept training at the academy and remained Bobadilla’s teacher in 1996. At a competition in Minas Gerais that year, Barreto promised Bobadilla a purple belt if he won his final; Bobadilla says he won by triangle and received the promotion at the end of the year. In a 2022 interview, GFTeam Vaz Lobo instructor Wallace Castro also named Barreto among the teachers from whom he learned.
