Ahmet Gurbanov

Turkmen jiu-jitsu instructor Ahmet Gurbanov taught at Shanghai’s Jing’an Cultural Center night school.

Biography

Ahmet Gurbanov, named 阿曼 in Chinese reports, was announced in August 2024 as a Turkmen Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor for the Jing’an Cultural Center branch of Shanghai’s citizen art night school. City News Service also identified him as a coach at Bushido Fight Club. A coach’s recommendation had brought him to the cultural center. Wenhui’s September 2024 report described him as having spent about five years in Shanghai and wanting more people in China to learn jiu-jitsu. He and fellow instructor Anna arrived early with their own mats to cover the floor. They rarely taught complete beginners. For shrimping, a basic hip-escape movement, they slowed each step down. Gurbanov then demonstrated with Anna how that movement could help someone escape. Their opening class took place on September 2, 2024. Zhu, taking her first coached jiu-jitsu lesson, found the movement drills more demanding than she had expected. City News Service’s classroom coverage names his fellow demonstrator as Ana Paula. His competition results that year included second place at the 2024 ADCC China Open in the adult men’s intermediate under-76kg division, representing Bushido China and Turkmenistan. In March 2025, Jing’an Cultural Center invited him back for its Brazilian jiu-jitsu experience course. The opening class followed on April 7. Gurbanov led the group through jumps, backward crawling and rolls. A Spanish participant trying jiu-jitsu for the first time found the lesson tiring but enjoyable. Another student, Zhou, described the fun of practicing in pairs with other novices. The course cost 500 yuan for 12 classes. In 2026, he again represented Bushido China and Turkmenistan at ADCC’s Phuket Open, placing second in the men’s intermediate under-76kg division.
