Luiz Franca was born in 1910 in Brazil. He trained under both Geo Omori in Sao Paulo and Soshihiro Satake in the Amazon region, giving him a unique technical foundation from two distinct Japanese martial arts traditions. He became the founder of the most significant non-Gracie BJJ lineage in history. His most famous student was Oswaldo Fadda, who in turn created a lineage that produced some of the most successful modern BJJ teams, including Nova Uniao and GFTeam. While the Gracie family dominated the narrative of BJJ history, Franca's parallel lineage proved that high-level BJJ could develop independently. He was posthumously recognized with a 10th degree red belt. He died in 1982.
