Asena Melike Ağansoy

Asena Melike Ağansoy pursued BJJ, returned to study and expanded her teaching through free women’s classes and inclusive movement programmes.

Biography

Asena Melike Ağansoy grew up with both movement and art. Born in Istanbul in 1991, she described a mother who had danced, held a Kyokushin black belt and encouraged her children to stay active. Her father’s paintings and images of women warriors helped shape her imagination. She tried several sports, competed in volleyball and, while at school, considered becoming a tattoo artist. Her brother Uğur’s enthusiasm drew her into Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2012. She began at Corvos Combat under Burak Değer Biçer. In her own 2018 account for Moya Brand, Ağansoy traced a decisive change to experiencing the European Championship as a white belt in 2013. She left a college course she did not enjoy to pursue full-time training. She understood the financial and social risk of that decision, while intending to return later to a subject she wanted to study. Her progress brought a blue belt in 2013, purple in 2015 and brown in May 2016. Teaching developed alongside her competition career: by 2014 she was working with women and children. In 2016 she returned to education with a scholarship for İstanbul Bilgi University’s sports-management programme. A profile in the university alumni association’s magazine, VITAE, explains her choice as a way to develop BJJ in Turkey and give her sporting experience a longer-term direction. She valued the chance to turn theory into projects, drawing on educators with substantial experience in sport. Studying also required changes to training. Describing her routine in 2018, she said examination weeks could reduce it to three sessions. Her 2016 Paris International Open results list first place in adult female brown-belt featherweight in both gi and no-gi, the latter contested without the traditional jacket. She also took silver in the gi brown-belt open class, where different weights compete together. In early February 2018, Biçer awarded her black belt at Corvos. BJJ Eastern Europe reported the promotion as Turkey’s first female BJJ black belt. Her brother Uğur and teammate Kaan Fazla received black belts at the same ceremony. In her own account, Ağansoy credited her teacher, brother, teammates and mother, treating the belt as shared work and a beginning rather than a completed journey. Making the sport more visible to women and children had been an explicit ambition in her 2017 KARAR interview, alongside international competition. By December 2020, she was running free self-defence classes for women. She told PlumeMag that more than 200 applications had arrived, describing participants across professions, educational backgrounds and ages, including a sixty-year-old cyclist. Her explanation of the teaching focused on awareness, positional control and decisions under pressure. She also described BJJ as a way to recognise personal reactions, accept setbacks and work toward improvement, placing those experiences ahead of an exclusive concern with appearance or weight. On her current website, Ağansoy connects martial practice with critical thought, movement and gender equity in sport. She describes her voluntary and public teaching as taking a trauma-informed approach to women’s self-defence. Her programme welcomes different ages and sporting backgrounds without requiring prior experience. Its stated practice combines observing and experiencing movement with attention to balance, leverage, timing and personal space. Her published projects include community self-defence classes at Hope Alkazar with Nike, school programmes and Rotaract Istanbul.
