Fernando Di Piero

Fernando Di Piero moved from Alliance training in São Paulo to coaching and organizing Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Ecuador.

Biography

Brazilian coach Fernando Di Piero, nicknamed Soluço, holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Before his coaching and organizing work in Ecuador, his path included judo and training at Fábio Gurgel's Alliance academy in São Paulo. Roberto Lage promoted him to blue and then purple belt. At Alliance he advanced to brown belt, and by the end of 2003 he had received his black belt. Coaching entered his career early, through judo and children's classes at Alliance. Competition remained part of it: he won the Brazilian National absolute division at brown belt in 2003, then took European Open silver at black belt in 2005 and 2010. Sherdog also records a 16-7-1 professional MMA career. In 2006, Di Piero moved to Ecuador and opened an Alliance franchise. A 2013 profile of Alliance Ecuador named him as its black-belt professor and described his work with Leonardo Iturralde and Juan Pablo García to build a competition team. His work also moved beyond the academy. Di Piero said he organized the Copa Carlson Gracie in 2007; in 2012, separate events were brought together as the Circuito Ecuatoriano de Jiu Jitsu Brasileño. Expreso described him in 2022 as the circuit's founder and leader. In a 2019 interview, Di Piero said Ecuador's jiu-jitsu federation brought several teams together and that he would oversee training for its selected athletes. His coaching also reached a future MMA contender: a 2024 Expreso profile identifies Di Piero as Marlon “Chito” Vera's first Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach, and quotes Di Piero recalling Vera as one of his early students.
