Federico Tisi

Federico Tisi helped turn Italy's early lack of BJJ schools into Tribe, an instructor system, a national union, and a documented European title.

Biography

Federico Tisi is an Italian Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, teacher, and the founder of Tribe Jiu Jitsu. His career traces a shift from searching abroad for instruction to building some of the structures through which the art could be taught and organized in Italy. Born in 1974, Tisi began training in 1996 after watching UFC 2. He later recalled that Italy had no established Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy available to him, so he learned by seeking out different professors and schools. In 1999, he founded Tribe in Rome. Tribe's own history describes it as Italy's first school devoted entirely to Brazilian jiu-jitsu and says it later grew through affiliated academies. That early scarcity also led Tisi to train under several teachers. BJJ Heroes credits the Vacirca brothers with Tisi's blue and purple belts and Roberto Almeida, known as Meneguetti, with his brown belt. It then describes a period of training with Carlos Lemos and Vitor Ribeiro, also known as Escorrega and Shaolin, before Tisi became a black belt in 2005. Tisi's own account says Ribeiro awarded the black belt while he was also training with Lemos, whereas the BJJ Heroes lineage field names Lemos as the direct predecessor. The available sources therefore preserve several important teachers but do not establish one uncontested black-belt awarder. Tisi has also named Eduardo Rocha as a major later influence. Tribe's institutional history says the Brazilian jiu-jitsu confederation recognized Tisi in 2005 as the first Italian instructor to hold a black belt. That year, Tisi recalled, he took third place at a World Cup in Brazil as a brown belt and received his black belt about a month later. No complete official division table was found for that 2005 result, so the bronze rests on his account. His 2010 European title has a firmer record: the official International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation results show that Tisi of Tribe JJ Roma won the Master 2 men's black-belt title. He later called that victory his greatest competitive achievement. Competition was only one part of the project. Tribe's current teaching page describes a shared curriculum spanning beginner safety, self-defense, and competition preparation. It also says affiliated instructors complete a course led by Tisi and attend at least two technical updates during each academic year. As of September 2026, Tribe describes Tisi as living and teaching in Milan and presents the organization as a nationwide network of affiliated academies. These are the academy's current descriptions of its own system and reach. Tisi also helped establish a national organizational framework. Tribe says that he and Dario Bacci founded the Unione Italiana Jiu Jitsu in 2012. In an interview that year, Tisi explained that the new organization was intended to promote Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Italy under International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation standards, certify academies and practitioners, support tournaments, and develop referees. That statement describes the founders' purpose in 2012, not the union's present mandate. As of September 2026, Tribe's biography identifies Tisi as the union's honorary president. His work eventually moved beyond the academy and federation. In 2022, Giunti published his book *La forza tranquilla: Lezioni sul combattere*. Rather than a technical manual, the publisher presents it as a reflection on combat, fear, stress, and self-control. The arc is consistent with the teaching career that preceded it: Tisi began by traveling to find instruction, then spent the following decades turning what he learned into schools, instructor training, competition, and institutions at home.
