Fabricio Medeiros

Fabricio “Bicudo” Medeiros took his teaching from Niterói to Florida while continuing to compete and win World Master titles.

Biography

Fabricio “Bicudo” Medeiros brought years of teaching in Niterói to Florida, where he reunited with Renato Tavares. His competition career has continued alongside his work at RT Martial Arts in Port St. Lucie, including three black-belt World Master titles in the gi. Medeiros was born in Niterói in 1975 and grew up in São Gonçalo. BJJ Heroes traces his introduction to jiu-jitsu to neighbourhood football friends who had begun taking classes. He started in 1986 under Carlinhos Andrade, progressing through the junior coloured belts before joining Associação Oriente under Amélio Arruda Câmara. At Carlson Gracie’s academy, he trained around Ricardo Libório, Bebeo Duarte and Tavares, whom he regarded as his principal teacher. His own academy dates Tavares’s award of his black belt to 2001. After Tavares moved abroad, Medeiros trained wrestling with Flavio Cabral in Niterói and practised jiu-jitsu with local friends. Friends subsequently brought him back to Copacabana to train with Ricardo Vieira at Fight Zone, Checkmat’s headquarters. BJJ Heroes describes pressure passing as his preferred approach. Teaching and collective preparation were already part of his work in Brazil. His 2010 blog advertised regular classes at Academia Niterói Swim. That September, he described preparing for the Brazilian No-Gi Nationals with visiting Checkmat teammates from Ilha do Governador. He won the Master 1 black-belt lightweight division at those nationals. Another post that April thanked seminar participants and the wider jiu-jitsu community for helping a friend affected by a landslide, and asked for further support. Medeiros also competed in MMA. Sherdog’s record begins with a win over Fabio Alves at Meca 6 on January 31, 2002, and includes a later rear-naked-choke victory over Renato Cianfa at Ring of Fire 5 on November 10, 2012. His move to the United States in 2016 brought him back into Tavares’s association. That year, he won World Master gold in the Master 3 black-belt lightweight division, repeating the result in 2018. He added a Master 3 lightweight title at the 2020 Pan No-Gi Championship. In a February 2021 Graciemag interview, Medeiros explained what he wanted his academy to offer: a place where newcomers could find friends and become part of a community. Weekend meals and gatherings connected students, teachers and families. On the mats, he taught that improvement depended on training partners, and that each student had a responsibility to help others develop. Reflecting on the move, he acknowledged the difficulty of time away from family while describing the reward of seeing his work develop. Competition continued to give him things to learn. He won the Master 4 black-belt lightweight division at the Pan Championship in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Discussing the 2022 title with Graciemag, he identified managing his thoughts as the main lesson, despite his years of experience. Confidence, he explained, had allowed him to compete more aggressively and negotiate Robert Schuster’s dangerous guard in the final. In the same interview, he described enjoying World Master for the chance to meet friends and share the mats with longstanding figures in the sport. His third World Master gold came in 2022, in Master 4 black-belt lightweight. By 2026 he was competing in Master 5, winning the Pan lightweight title and taking silver at World Master in the same weight class. RT Martial Arts now lists him as a fifth-degree black belt and its jiu-jitsu instructor in Port St. Lucie.
