Denny Prokopos

Described as Eddie Bravo's first black belt, the San Francisco grappler won a FILA world title in 2010 and the second Eddie Bravo Invitational.

Biography

Denny Prokopos, nicknamed "300", is a San Francisco grappler whom BJJ Heroes and his academy describe as the first black belt Eddie Bravo awarded and the first to come out of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, the system Bravo founded. 10th Planet's official list of black belts names him directly after Bravo. He won world titles in no-gi grappling, which is contested without the traditional jacket, and set up his own academy in the city where he was born. Early years Prokopos grew up in San Francisco. As a boy he followed professional wrestling, and according to BJJ Heroes it was while searching a video store for wrestling tapes that he found recordings of the early UFC events, where Royce Gracie's performances made a strong impression on him. His parents were firmly against the idea at first, but he won them over, and at 12 he started training with Charles Gracie as his first coach. He also wrestled in high school. Over time he found he preferred grappling without the gi, began taking private lessons from Eddie Bravo, and at about 16 left his previous instructor to train exclusively in Bravo's method. BJJ Heroes says he later put formal education aside to concentrate on training and competition. It also credits him with a bronze medal at blue belt at the 2004 Pan American Championship. World titles The official results of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) for the 2007 World No-Gi Championship list him first in the brown belt lightweight division, with Joel Tudor second. BJJ Heroes and his academy both date his black belt from Bravo to 2009, and at that year's edition of the same championship he took one of the two bronze medals in the black belt featherweight division, behind the champion, Baret Yoshida, and the runner-up, Samir Chantre. He also competed for the United States at the FILA Grappling World Championships. According to USA Wrestling, which listed him as Dennis Prokopos of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, he won the men's no-gi gold medal at 65 kg (143 lb) in Krakow, Poland, on March 27, 2010, having taken silver at the 2009 Grappling World Championships. His gold was one of three individual no-gi titles the United States won that day. BJJ Heroes says Ricardo Libório coached him while he prepared with the American team for the FILA championships, and that he worked a great deal with Jake Shields. Sherdog's fight database also records a single amateur mixed martial arts bout for him, a second-round loss by technical knockout to Cesar Campos at a Tuff-N-Uff event in February 2011. Eddie Bravo Invitational In October 2014 he won one of the two 16-man brackets at the second Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI 2), a submission-only event held at Florentine Gardens in Hollywood, California. Sherdog, which described him as a product of 10th Planet San Francisco, reported that he beat Rich Chavez, Eddie Fyvie and Russ Miura on the way to a final against Nathan Orchard. He got there with two rear-naked chokes (strangles applied from behind) and a twister, a submission the report noted his instructor, Eddie Bravo, had made famous. In the final neither man could force a submission in regulation time, and Prokopos took the title in overtime by escaping fastest. His academy's own list of achievements includes, alongside the EBI 2 title, a 2014 Gracie Worlds title and two Combat Jiu Jitsu superfight wins. Digitsu's match database shows him back at the Eddie Bravo Invitational in three later editions between December 2015 and October 2017, including an overtime win over Kevin Widdoes at EBI 13. Later years In 2018 he hosted "The Denny Prokopos Show" on the Sherdog Radio Network with producer TJ De Santis, with episodes on subjects such as over-training, the martial arts lifestyle and rule sets. Digitsu records an armbar win over Don Stoner at Submission Underground 19 in December 2020. In February 2021 he was a guest on the Forever White Belt podcast. According to the episode notes, the conversation covered his time away from the sport and his return to it, a recent win on UFC Fight Pass, and his school, San Francisco Jiu-Jitsu Academy. The notes also named Caio Terra as his teacher, and Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields as training partners. Teaching in San Francisco According to his academy, he began teaching in 2009, the year of his black belt. In February 2015 Budovideos, introducing a five-part video interview with him, reported that he was running his own 10th Planet school in San Francisco. In late 2023 the website of San Francisco Jiu-Jitsu Academy described it as founded by Prokopos and as the home of both him and Caio Terra. Prokopos was its no-gi director, and by the academy's own account he taught all of its no-gi classes, while its gi programs followed Terra's curriculum. The academy said it had served the San Francisco area for more than ten years and had recently moved to Bernal Heights. In early 2024 its instructors page listed Prokopos as owner and head instructor, as well as no-gi director and general manager of the gym.
