David Camarillo

Judo and BJJ black belt Dave Camarillo developed Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu by bringing throws and groundwork into one system.

Biography

Born in 1977, David "Dave" Camarillo became a black belt in both judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu and developed Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu by combining the two arts. His training began in California at age five, with his father, Jim Camarillo, leading the family's judo routine. He later spent summers training in Japan. According to a 2016 profile based on Camarillo's account, he added Brazilian jiu-jitsu at nineteen because its groundwork complemented judo's emphasis on throws. He received his BJJ black belt under Cesar and Ralph Gracie at twenty-six, having also earned a judo black belt. After teaching with the Gracies, he coached at American Kickboxing Academy, where he trained Cain Velasquez from the beginning of Velasquez's professional career through his 2010 UFC heavyweight title. Camarillo's blend of judo and BJJ became known as Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu. The system also became a teaching platform: Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu's online academy identifies Camarillo and Matt Darcy as its founders and presents Camarillo as an active instructor in its lesson library.
