Biography

Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Omatsu is a Japanese-American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt promoted by Leka Vieira and Rigan Machado, known as the first woman outside Brazil to receive the rank. Born in Torrance, California, in 1961 and raised by Japanese parents, Omatsu began training in the mid-1990s. She joined Rigan Machado's school in Redondo Beach to learn self-defense and continued despite initially finding few female training partners. Competing as a brown belt on Vieira's team, she earned bronze at the 2001 Pan American Championship. Vieira and Machado promoted her to black belt in October 2002, and the Rigan Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association lists her among Machado's certified black belts. Beyond competition, Omatsu's public work included teaching, seminars, interviews for GrappleTV, and a four-volume Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructional series with Felicia Oh.
