Carlos Augusto

A practitioner formed by Reylson Gracie, Carlos Augusto trained black belts Jefferson Moura and Marco Alvan and had a California affiliate in 2001.

Biography

Carlos Augusto's documented role in Brazilian jiu-jitsu reaches through two black-belt students and an affiliate in California. Jefferson Moura identifies Augusto as his first teacher and says Augusto was formed as a practitioner by Reylson Gracie. BJJ Heroes publishes the same lineage from Reylson Gracie through Augusto to Moura. A Team Link biography adds Marco Alvan, who trained at Augusto's gym and earned his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under him. Moura's account gives the clearest picture of Augusto in the classroom. He remembers a teacher who had students repeat positions and make precise adjustments. Gracie Barra Institute reports that Moura entered Augusto's school at fifteen and earned his black belt within six years. The same Gracie Barra account describes a transition between teachers. When Augusto planned to close his school, he advised Moura to continue training with Carlos Gracie Jr. Alvan's story shows a different extension of Augusto's teaching. According to the Team Link biography, Alvan came to the United States in 2001 to help Augusto at Augusto's affiliate in California before relocating to Massachusetts. BJJ Heroes later describes Moura as a world and Brazilian national champion who led Gracie Barra's Rio headquarters. Those are Moura's achievements, not Augusto's. Together, the records show Augusto through concrete acts of instruction and continuity: technical repetition, two students who became black belts, a handoff to Carlos Gracie Jr., and a documented affiliate in California.
