Amal Amjahid

Belgian black belt Amal Amjahid won major JJIF titles and helped C.E.N.S. Academy combine jiu-jitsu with youth support in Molenbeek in 2019.

Biography

Amal Amjahid built an international jiu-jitsu career from the Brussels academy where she began as a child. In an interview with BJJ Heroes, she said that her family first tried several martial arts after she was bullied. She found jiu-jitsu at seven and entered her first competition two months later. That early start became a long partnership with Khalid Houry, whom Amjahid described as her first and only jiu-jitsu instructor. She said she prepared for major events at his academy in Belgium, training with familiar partners rather than traveling to foreign camps. Houry coached her from white belt and promoted her to black belt on June 30, 2018. Her competitive record grew alongside that local continuity. At the 2017 World Games in Wrocław, Poland, she won two jiu-jitsu gold medals. In 2019, she won the adult women’s black-belt light-feather division at the European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship and added gold at the World Mastership Games in South Korea. Later that year, she defeated Belgian teammate Fran Vanderstukken in the 57 kg final at the JJIF World Championship in Abu Dhabi, a victory reported as her eighth JJIF gold and fifth world-final win in five appearances since 2015. Amjahid retained a European IBJJF title in 2020, this time at featherweight. At the 2021 JJIF World Championship, she retained the women’s under-57-kilogram title by defeating France’s Laurence Cousin Fouillat in the final. The academy also connected her competition career to work with young people in Molenbeek. A 2019 BRUZZ profile reported that Amjahid helped Houry lead C.E.N.S. Academy, taught on the mat twice a week, and ran after-school homework support three times a week. It was a role in which the same place that developed her as a competitor also gave her a hand in the development of others.
