Vinc Tan

Vinc Tan brought overseas training experience to Singapore, building Fortitude’s community while competing on the international circuit.

Biography

Vinc Tan began Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2010, during the final year of his university studies. Fortitude’s biography describes him as conscious of starting relatively late for an athlete, with the ambition of competing at black-belt level. He devoted periods to full-time training and competition overseas, including travel to Brazil and the United States. He founded Fortitude Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Singapore in 2014, turning his attention to its coaching programmes. In 2015, Luís Carlos Mateus, known as Manimal, awarded him his black belt in Rio de Janeiro. Shane Suzuki became a regular training companion during trips between Singapore and Australia; they had travelled to train and compete together since their purple-belt period. Fortitude describes Tan’s teaching as drawing on curricula and styles encountered with other teams. His stated aim is to develop students’ mental fortitude and encourage them beyond familiar situations. A 2018 visitor account by J.W. Seo gives a view of the community around that teaching. Students welcomed him, asking about his travels and training and sharing their own experiences of life in Singapore. Seo described fundamentals classes alongside sessions focused on sparring, the practice of applying skills against a resisting partner. His report also recorded the academy’s move to a larger facility near City Square Mall that year. Tan’s 2018 IBJJF results included Master 1 black-belt middleweight gold at both the Tokyo International Open and Asian Championship. At medium-heavyweight he took American Nationals silver and Pan Pacific bronze. His SJJIF individual record also lists Los Angeles International Open silver in the male black-belt Master 30 middleweight division that year. The school identifies Kacie Tan and Emma Xiong among students he coached from white through black belt. The IBJJF’s 2026 account likewise identifies Xiong as Tan’s student, while recording that Letícia Ribeiro awarded her black belt in 2017. Fortitude also names Gladwin Lee as a black belt under Tan who trains and coaches in its early-morning classes.
