Valdir Araújo brings judo, jiu-jitsu and MMA experience to coaching adults and children at MMA Monsters in Florida.

Biography

Valdir Araújo de Lima Junior, known as Baby Monster, combines a background in judo, jiu-jitsu and MMA in his work as head coach at MMA Monsters in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The academy lists him as the primary instructor for its jiu-jitsu and Little Monsters programmes. Araújo was born in Gama, Brasília, in 1984 and moved to Bahia as a child. BJJ Heroes describes an upbringing that included swimming, capoeira and competitive football. A meeting on a beach led Helio Moura to introduce him to jiu-jitsu. When Moura moved away, Daniel Valverde became his teacher, guiding him from white to black belt. After Valverde left for the United States, Araújo concentrated on judo in São Paulo and later trained with Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. He earned his judo black belt in 2006, followed by his jiu-jitsu black belt from Valverde in 2007. In 2008, representing Osvaldo Alves, Araújo won the European Championship’s adult black-belt heavyweight division. Later in 2008, according to BJJ Heroes, Valverde called him to the United States to cover classes while he coached Rodrigo Nogueira on The Ultimate Fighter. Araújo added striking training and began competing in MMA. His listed professional debut was a first-round stoppage of Robert De Morales that November. His subsequent bouts included a decision loss to Chris Weidman in 2010, Bellator appearances in 2011 and a World Series of Fighting contest in 2014. Grappling competition continued alongside MMA. At the 2014 ADCC South Florida event, he won both the professional adult under-91kg division and the professional absolute for MMA Masters. The following year, he represented the Blackzilians on The Ultimate Fighter 21. On the show, he caught Steve Carl’s second-round takedown attempt in a guillotine choke and forced the submission. His later match with Nathan Coy ended in a unanimous-decision loss. UFC’s recap describes Coy controlling the contest through wrestling while Araújo threatened a guillotine and a kneebar. He took bronze at the 2016 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds and silver at the 2017 American Nationals in the gi, both in adult black-belt medium-heavyweight. He also placed second at under 88kg in two ADCC qualifiers in São Paulo, behind Murilo Santana in 2017 and Gabriel Almeida Salles in 2019. His MMA career extended into October 2021, when he stopped Nate Marquardt in the second round at XMMA 3. His teaching has also taken him abroad. Delariva Nantes records a two-day visit during which Araújo taught MMA, grappling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu seminars. His instructional Judo Takedowns For No Gi addresses how judo can work without jacket grips. Its public syllabus connects clinch entries and single-leg attacks with body-lock throws and foot sweeps. The final section covers overhook attacks—controlling an opponent’s arm from over the top—along with foot-sweep drills, takedown defence and attacks from open positions. At MMA Monsters, the advertised jiu-jitsu programme includes gi and no-gi work on positional control, escapes and submissions, with fundamentals and competition classes. Little Monsters introduces children to jiu-jitsu, basic striking and judo movements through age-specific movement games and fundamental techniques.
