Tibor Repta

Tibor Repta helped unite Bratislava’s BJJ groups; a friendship formed through training later became the partnership behind Fatbot Games.

Biography

Tibor Repta gathered an early Brazilian jiu-jitsu training group in Bratislava after training at OFA’s mixed martial arts academy. In Ľubomír Repašský’s recollection, Repta wanted a less violent alternative to MMA and brought people together to practise BJJ. Michal Sobolič dates the Bratislava club to 2007, identifying it as a GB Pitbull branch. Sobolič began training with Repta there in 2008, after earlier experience in MMA and combat sambo. He named Repta as his first dedicated BJJ coach. Repta’s own development included a blue belt awarded at a seminar with visiting instructor Adilson “Bitta” Lima. The club’s 2009 archive describes gi and no-gi training—with and without the traditional jacket—and invites newcomers to watch without paying. It documents sessions in Petržalka and subsequently lists training at Hanuman Gym’s DK Ovsište premises. A March 2010 club report records Repta winning blue-belt under-85 kg bronze at the Bad Boy Challenge in Czechia, finishing the bronze-medal match with an armbar, an armlock. Repta later proposed joining forces with Repašský. According to Repašský, he preferred training to leading classes and wanted one larger club instead of two small ones. By November 2012, Repašský described the merged BJJ Slovakia community as having roughly forty to fifty regular trainees, with Repta training and teaching there as a purple belt. BJJ also provided the friendship behind a later creative partnership. Game developer Matej Zajačik told Farflame that he and Repta had known each other for years through jiu-jitsu before establishing their studio. Repta had another longstanding interest: in his own 2021 Visiongame answers, he recalled encountering games as a small child and later programming on a Commodore 64 at his local library. Editing tools for Half-Life, Counter-Strike and Morrowind helped steer him towards development. At university, games that allowed modifications and custom scenarios particularly interested him. Zajačik remembered being drawn to Repta’s early steampunk dungeon-game prototype and his enthusiasm for the project. He joined in, helping improve its movement and sound. After working on the prototype together, they left their jobs, created a demonstration for investors and secured backing for a company of their own. That company was Fatbot Games, an independent developer based in Bratislava. Its team page identifies Repta as cofounder and project lead, with responsibilities spanning art direction, game and level design, story, business and public communication. In December 2021, Repta described the demands of that work: long days and the challenge of reaching a wider paying audience, because making a good game did not by itself ensure visibility. He said BJJ had previously helped his wellbeing, but company commitments had left him without time for it.
