Temo Mamatsashvili

Temo Mamatsashvili brought London BJJ experience back to Tbilisi, helping build Legion with partner and teacher Alexander Umantsev.

Biography

Temo Mamatsashvili returned to Georgia after training at London’s Roger Gracie Academy with an ambition to establish a BJJ programme in Tbilisi. American practitioner Kevin Meyers introduced him to Alexander Umantsev, and the two decided to open an academy together. In a 2020 BJJ Globetrotters interview, Umantsev described Mamatsashvili as his friend, partner and student, dating Legion BJJ Georgia’s opening to May 2017. Umantsev’s account explains the practical challenge behind that project. They were introducing an unfamiliar martial art to people accustomed to inexpensive judo and wrestling programmes, while needing the academy to sustain itself as a business. Building the gym therefore involved adjusting expectations about what BJJ training would cost as well as attracting students. The community he described brought teenagers, businesspeople and overseas visitors onto the same mats. He linked its appeal to the atmosphere and relationships that developed around training. Legion’s current coaching page identifies Mamatsashvili as its founder, a black belt and a gi coach, teaching the form of BJJ practised in the traditional jacket. He works within a roster that divides gi, no-gi, children’s and fundamentals instruction among several coaches.
