Salvatore Pace

Salvatore Pace built jiu-jitsu schools in Sicily and England after training under Carlos Lemos Jr and working as a chef.

Biography

Salvatore Pace’s route to teaching jiu-jitsu began in other martial arts. Known as Salvo, he was born in Sicily on 25 October 1974, according to BJJ Heroes. His nickname, Squalo, means shark in Italian. The biography describes judo and karate from ten to sixteen, followed by qualification as a Muay Thai instructor. He began grappling in Italy in 1996 and took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu in England in late 2004. While working as a chef, he also taught and competed in Thai boxing and MMA. The account identifies an MMA loss to a ground fighter as the reason he gave more time to jiu-jitsu. Carlos Lemos Jr became his teacher in early 2005. Countryside BJJ’s January 2011 promotion report describes an apprenticeship that extended beyond regular classes: Pace travelled around Europe with Lemos, helping at seminars while training and working toward becoming a full-time jiu-jitsu instructor. In 2006, he spent six weeks at Gracie Barra headquarters in Rio with Lemos and Giuseppe Schembri. BJJ Heroes lists a blue-belt World Cup title that year. Pace’s school-building work included Gracie Barra Sicily and Bath. The Bath academy identifies him as a founder of Gracie Barra Sicilia and its South West UK network. By the end of 2010, he had received his black belt from Lemos. The contemporary promotion report explicitly credits Lemos with awarding every one of his belts and describes Carlos Gracie Jr’s blessing of the black belt. Graham Barlow told Qialance that Pace’s teaching and example as a leader were what brought him back after his first jiu-jitsu lesson. Pace’s use of leverage and pressure on the ground changed his understanding of the art. Barlow also valued the connection between instruction and practice: the techniques Pace taught were ones he used himself in sparring. In his written introduction to a 2022 podcast episode with Pace, Barlow said he had begun training with him in 2011 and received every belt, from white through black, under him. By 2022, Barlow described Pace as owner of the Bath and West Wilts schools and co-owner of Gracie Barra Gillingham. His work also reached people outside the usual jiu-jitsu competition circuit: the school reports that he worked with rugby players Matt Stevens, Lee Mears and Duncan Bell. In March 2024, OPES announced a BJJ seminar with Pace at Sole del Sud in Agrigento for 6 April, covering techniques, tactics and training methods. Gracie Barra Bath’s current instructor page lists him as its fourth-degree black belt head instructor and credits him with promoting more than 35 black belts across the region. It also lists a 2025 induction into the Gracie Barra Legacy Hall. The academy he leads provides children’s and teens’ classes alongside adult fundamentals, advanced jiu-jitsu and no-gi training.
