Renato Barreto

Renato “Barretinho” Barreto combined lightweight competition with helping the Gracies in training camps and seminars.

Biography

Renato “Barretinho” Barreto was a Gracie Humaitá lightweight on the podium at the first World Championship in 1996. His career also took him into training camps and seminar rooms, helping Royler and Rickson Gracie prepare for MMA and assisting Rickson's teaching. According to BJJ Heroes, Barreto began as a child at Gracie Humaitá in Rio de Janeiro. His parents arranged private lessons, first with Rolker and later with Royler, that continued from white through brown belt. The biography credits Hélio Gracie with awarding his purple and brown belts, the latter after Barreto won an internal competition between Gracie academies. It identifies Rolker and Royler as his black-belt instructors and links that promotion to winning the Brazilian Nationals at brown belt. At the 1996 Worlds, Barreto took adult black-belt lightweight silver behind teammate Paulo Barroso. Marcelo Alonso's retrospective describes them closing out the division: both reached the final and did not fight each other. Alonso also recounts Barreto submitting Muzio De Angelis with an armbar during the tournament. The Pan Championship that year produced another lightweight silver, this time behind Marcio Feitosa. Recalling their final in Graciemag, Feitosa described a difficult match against Barreto's particularly flexible guard, the positions used to control an opponent from underneath. Barreto returned to the adult black-belt lightweight podium at the Worlds in 1997 and 1999, taking bronze on both occasions. In 2004, competing in a different age and weight category, he won the Master International's Master 1 black-belt middleweight division for Gracie Humaitá. His work with the Gracies extended beyond his own matches. BJJ Heroes describes him helping Royler and Rickson prepare for MMA after earning his black belt, including training stays in Japan. Later accounts from seminar hosts give specific examples of his role alongside Rickson. At a March 2009 seminar in Nashville, hosted by Eric Silver, Barreto and Eduardo Mano assisted Rickson through four three-hour sessions. Silver's report describes work on details of foundational positions, escapes, body connection and breathing. Warrior's Cove also credited Barreto with assisting Rickson at its seminar. In March 2010, Valente Brothers announced that Barretinho would accompany Rickson during his United States stay. Teaching children was another part of his work. BJJ Heroes describes him later leading Gracie Jiu Jitsu for Kids, a program intended to develop coordination and confidence through jiu-jitsu. In January 2026, Relson Gracie promoted Barreto to a red-and-black coral belt. A public promotion post co-published by Relson and albert_creator identified the recipient as professor Renato Barreto, Barretinho; Jits Magazine reported the promotion that month.
