Rafael Barbosa

Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa is a black belt, competitor, and teacher who helped build Soul Fighters and co-created Double Five.

Biography

Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa built his jiu-jitsu career at the meeting point of competition, team building, and teaching. He began training at 11 and said he was already helping with classes by 14. BJJ Heroes traces his nickname to those early years: as the youngest student in an adult class, he went from “Formiguinha” to “Formiga.” In a 2025 interview, Barbosa said André “Dedeco” Almeida guided him from white belt to black belt and awarded him that rank in 2002, when he was 19. Team building became a second thread in his career. Soul Fighters' own history places Barbosa and Leandro “Tatu” Escobar alongside Bruno and Augusto Mendes in the collaboration that became Soul Fighters in May 2008, with Álvaro Mansur also joining the group. Barbosa said he moved to the United States in 2010. In December 2019, a report on a joint announcement named Barbosa, Escobar, and João Gabriel Rocha as the three partners leaving Soul Fighters to create Double Five Jiu-Jitsu. Competition remained central. Official IBJJF results list Barbosa as the adult black-belt middleweight winner at the 2011 Boston Summer International Open. That April, Graciemag reported that he defeated Guybson Sá in the New York Open final to win an IBJJF open-weight division for the first time. Two years later in Boston, he won his weight division and finished second in the open class. Barbosa treated that final as a technical lesson, telling Graciemag that he wanted to keep his game open and moving forward. His record also extends deep into the masters divisions. At the 2026 European IBJJF Championship, official results place him first in the Master 3 black-belt middleweight division for Double Five Highland Village. Later that year, the IBJJF's Jiu-Jitsu Con ranking announcement listed him first among the top three male Master 3 competitors for the 2025–2026 season. That listing is a season ranking, not another championship title. Teaching runs through the same timeline rather than beginning after competition. In 2013, Graciemag identified Barbosa as João Gabriel Rocha's first instructor and published his position-first approach to back control: secure the position and its points before attacking. His own academy now describes butterfly guard, X-guard, competition strategy, culture building, and mentorship as its teaching emphases under him. Those are the academy's descriptions of his specialties, not an independent ranking of his technical strengths. Barbosa's academy in Highland Village, Texas, currently presents him as its owner and head instructor and as a fifth-degree black belt; it describes the school as Double Five's flagship headquarters. The degree is an academy-reported credential. Taken together, the documented arc connects teaching from his teens, black-belt competition across decades, and the building of Soul Fighters and Double Five.
