Peter Zethraeus

Peter Zethraeus turned a training visit to Brazil into an invitation that brought Marcelo Yogui to teach BJJ in Stockholm.

Biography

During a visit to Brazil in the 1990s, Peter Zethraeus saw martial arts training from his flat and went to the academy to find out more. The Swedish visitor met Marcelo Yogui, but communicating required help: Yogui spoke no English, so a Portuguese-speaking friend of Zethraeus helped them understand each other. In Yogui’s recollection to Grapplingbloggen in 2011, that encounter became the beginning of a connection to teaching in Stockholm. Zethraeus trained with Yogui for two weeks before inviting him to teach at a friend’s academy in Sweden. He then returned with a plane ticket. Yogui subsequently taught at Thomas Rasmussen’s Kampsportskolan in Stockholm, a Muay Thai club he later identified as Stockholm Muay Thai. Zethraeus’s invitation brought a BJJ teacher into that existing martial arts environment. Yogui’s own biography credits his friend with giving him his first opportunity to present Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Sweden. Anders Eriksson’s 2014 history of Swedish BJJ likewise places Zethraeus’s initiative within the sport’s early development in the country, identifying it as the reason Yogui began teaching at Kampsportskolan. Another practitioner remembered Zethraeus’s influence in more personal terms. In a 2017 interview recalling his time at Stockholm Muaythai, Babak Ashti credited him with opening his eyes and helping him find direction during a difficult phase. MMAnytt’s written account of Ashti’s 2025 podcast appearance later named Zethraeus and Yogui together as the people who introduced him to grappling and BJJ.
