Paul E. Schreiner

Paul Schreiner is a black belt and technical coach whose path runs from Santa Cruz and Kaijin to Marcelo Garcia Academy and Frogtown.

Biography

Paul E. Schreiner is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and coach whose own account of teaching emphasizes fundamentals, movement, and the careful correction of mistakes. His path has run from Santa Cruz through Kaijin Academy and Marcelo Garcia Academy to Frogtown Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles. Born in Santa Cruz, California, in 1977, Schreiner began training in 1996 at Claudio Franca's academy. Much of his instruction there came from Garth Taylor. Injuries and a serious infection after surgery interrupted those early years, but Schreiner later recalled that watching Taylor train with BJ Penn prompted him to return. He received every belt through Franca and Taylor, earning his black belt in December 2007. Schreiner and Taylor went on to co-found Kaijin Academy in Santa Cruz. Schreiner had met Marcelo Garcia in 2004, and after an invitation in 2007 he trained with Garcia in New York. He later accepted an instructor position when Garcia needed one. A 2026 career summary places Schreiner at Marcelo Garcia Academy for fourteen years and credits him with contributing to its competition team. It also records coaching work at American Kickboxing Academy and the creation of a jiu-jitsu program at Apple's Cupertino headquarters. His competitive record includes two results specifically listed by BJJ Heroes: bronze at the 2006 IBJJF World Championship as a brown belt and silver at the 2012 IBJJF Masters World Championship in the Master 1 division. These are documented highlights, not presented as a complete record. Schreiner's description of the white-belt stage offers the clearest view of his technical approach. He treated sound fundamentals and movement as the most important foundation for a student's development and stressed that instructors must be willing to correct mistakes. Now at Frogtown Jiu-Jitsu in Los Angeles, he brings that teaching perspective to the latest chapter of a coaching career spanning several academies and programs.
