Nurul Fikri

Nurul Fikri found BJJ through MMA, won the PON gold he had wanted since childhood and now teaches beginners at Gracie Barra Indonesia.

Biography

Nurul Fikri was born in Jakarta and moved with his family to neighboring Bekasi while at elementary school. His first martial art was Taekwondo: a friend was training, and Fikri liked what he saw. He later expanded into Muay Thai and BJJ, competing across several combat-sport formats. Gracie Barra Indonesia's account describes him initially seeking BJJ to prepare for MMA and then coming to love the art itself. Alisson Braga became his BJJ teacher. By February 2020, Fikri was a blue belt in BJJ and a black belt in Taekwondo. His ONE Championship debut came on short notice. In his February 5, 2020 interview with the promotion, he said he had accepted a bout against Sunoto with roughly a week to prepare. He was already training for another contest when the opportunity arose. The opponent was familiar: Fikri and Sunoto had trained together. Fikri acknowledged that relationship while stressing that both would need to act professionally when they competed. He said he was prepared to strike or grapple and recognized Sunoto's takedowns and positional control. Their February 7 bout at ONE: Warrior's Code went three rounds, with Sunoto winning by unanimous decision. Fikri's later grappling record included bronze in men's 69-kilogram gi jujitsu at the SEA Games 2021 edition, held in Vietnam in May 2022. He also earned silver at PON XX in Papua. Representing West Java at PON XXI in September 2024, he won the men's under-77-kilogram ne-waza division, the ground-fighting discipline, after defeating Jakarta's Sunardi Muliawan in the final. Speaking to ANTARA afterward, he described a PON gold as a childhood ambition. The preparation had lasted more than a year in the provincial training camp and included trial competitions. He had already faced Sunardi in qualification and knew his opponent, but said the final remained difficult. He dedicated the medal to his team, family and supporters. Having achieved the PON gold, he set his sights on a future SEA Games gold. In December 2025, ANTARA named Fikri among Indonesia's six jujitsu athletes at the SEA Games in Thailand. He is now listed by Gracie Barra Indonesia as a BJJ brown belt under Braga and an assistant and beginners' coach.
