Nikos Gougoulas

Nikos Gougoulas moved from karate into BJJ, developed a northern Greek teaching network and guided Kinesis students through their belt progression.

Biography

Nikos Gougoulas developed his martial-arts practice in Halastra, near Thessaloniki, with a background in Shotokan karate. In his June 2013 interview with BJJ Eastern Europe, he described himself as a JKA third dan and former national champion. His entry into Brazilian jiu-jitsu had come in 2000 through Brazilian teacher Roberto Santana, who taught him the fundamentals and introduced him to André Ushirobira. He credited Ushirobira with inspiring his love of BJJ. His students also mattered to his own development: he described them as a family who helped him improve as both a fighter and a teacher. He became a BJJ black belt in 2011. Opportunities to compete at that rank were initially limited. In 2013, Gougoulas said he had not yet had the chance to compete as a black belt because there were few local opponents at his level. He was preparing for the 2014 European Championships. At the same time, he described a growing Greek scene with increasing championship participation and represented Robson Moura Nova União in the country. His club also took on an organizing role. A 2013 announcement listed the Halastra club as organizer of a planned northern Greece cup in gi and no-gi, with Gougoulas as the contact. Gi competition uses the jiu-jitsu jacket and trousers, while no-gi removes those grips. The relationship with Ushirobira continued through visiting instruction. On June 10–11, 2017, Gougoulas's Halastra gym hosted his teacher for a seminar attended by Kinesis and clubs from Katerini, Thessaloniki and Halkidiki. Kinesis reported that Gougoulas received his second BJJ degree at the gathering. That report also described his contribution beyond his own gym. Kinesis in Kilkis was running BJJ classes under his supervision, and its young karate students were learning BJJ techniques too. His seminar preceded Kinesis's December 2018 belt awards, again attended by several northern Greek clubs. His own competition record included bronze at the 2018 Rome IBJJF Open in men's Master 3 black-belt medium-heavyweight, representing Ushirobira JJ Greece. Karate has remained another part of his work. The Japan Karate Association lists him with Karate Chalastras Dojo and names him as liaison officer for JKA WF Hellas. In BJJ, he is listed as the person in charge of RMNU Gougoulas Team in Halastra. He continued teaching across the wider club network in 2025. On February 22, he led Drakos Kallithea's annual BJJ seminar and belt assessments, hosted by coach Antonis Moschonas. At the July 5 Gougoulas Team seminar in Halastra, he taught leg locks, submissions attacking the legs, to teams from across Greece. Kinesis instructor Antonis Giannakidis progressed to four stripes on his brown belt at that July gathering. At the December 13 assessments at Gougoulas Team headquarters, Gougoulas examined the Kinesis group and Giannakidis received his black belt. Kinesis's report identified Gougoulas as a fourth-degree BJJ black belt.
