Muzio de Angelis

Muzio Bruno De Angelis is a Brasa black belt known for competing, teaching and refereeing jiu-jitsu.

Biography

Muzio Bruno De Angelis is a jiu-jitsu black belt and Brasa instructor known for competing, teaching and refereeing. His father, Pierino, introduced him to jiu-jitsu at age five. At 16, he trained with Sylvio Behring in Copacabana and later with Roberto Traven. Graciemag dates Traven's award of his black belt to December 1, 1994. That year, De Angelis won the adult brown belt lightweight division at the Brazilian Championship. The IBJJF results list De Angelis in a shared third place in the adult black belt middleweight division at the 2000 Pan Championship. He won the Master 1 black belt middleweight division at the 2003 Master International, then the Master 2 black belt heavyweight division at the same event in 2008. Graciemag's 2017 profile treated his 2008 result as the end of his competitive career, but its 2018 report documented his return after a long break at the FJJ-Rio Carioca Championship. It described a 14–0 semifinal win and said he and a Brasa teammate shared the top of the podium. De Angelis has described himself as one of Brasa's founders, dating the team's creation to 2003. In 2011, Igor Silva was training in the evenings at De Angelis's Brasa academy. De Angelis has also recalled that Álvaro Mansor invited him to referee in 2003 after he took a CBJJ rules course, while he was still competing. Alongside his instruction for Brasa, De Angelis had given IBJJF rules courses in Brazil and abroad by 2017. In a 2015 teaching article, he urged students to keep learning, vary their practice, honor commitments and arrive on time.
