Mayssa Bastos

Mayssa Bastos is a Brazilian AOJ black belt with seven adult gi and five No-Gi IBJJF world titles and a ONE submission-grappling belt.

Biography

Mayssa Caldas Pereira Bastos is a Brazilian AOJ black belt known for seven adult gi and five adult No-Gi IBJJF world titles, as well as a ONE submission-grappling championship. The World Championship sequence here follows the IBJJF's published division results. Bastos grew up in Maricá, Brazil, where she practiced judo and began jiu-jitsu at about eleven or twelve after her father and older brother introduced her to it. She started at a local GF Team branch and later trained at the team's Méier headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. She has said that becoming a black belt and world champion became her aim soon after her first class. Competition was part of that path early: at the 2018 gi Worlds she took silver at brown belt in the light-featherweight division. She received her black belt that June. Her first black-belt world gold came in a different format. Later in 2018 she won the IBJJF No-Gi light-featherweight title for GF Team, and she also won that year's Eddie Bravo Invitational tournament under a separate submission-only format. In 2019 she earned her first black-belt gi World title at roosterweight, ahead of Rikako Yuasa, and added the No-Gi roosterweight world title. She won both gi and No-Gi world titles again in 2021, with the No-Gi gold coming at light featherweight. In 2022 Bastos trained at Unity Jiu-Jitsu in New York under Murilo Santana. In a March 2022 interview, she said she was an instructor there and assisted Santana with classes during the day. She moved between roosterweight and light featherweight, winning the European championship at the latter weight. At the gi Worlds, now representing Unity, she won a close roosterweight final against Brenda Larissa Alves da Silva after the two traded sweeps. That title followed European, Pan and Brazilian championship wins earlier in the year. Bastos represented AOJ when she won the 2023 gi and No-Gi roosterweight Worlds. The No-Gi final ended with an inside heel hook against Mariana Rolszt. In 2024 she won her fifth gi world title: two opening submissions brought her to a points victory over Jhenifer Aquino in the final. She added that year's No-Gi light-featherweight title. Her gi roosterweight wins continued in 2025 and 2026, giving her seven titles across the 2019 and 2021–26 editions of the championship. The AOJ phase also brought a second title circuit. In August 2024 Bastos defeated Danielle Kelly by unanimous decision to win ONE's women's atomweight submission-grappling belt in Bangkok. She defended it against Kelly in December, again by unanimous decision, after a late heel-hook attempt scored the match's only submission catch. These ONE bouts were separate from her IBJJF gi and No-Gi World Championship results. In discussing her game, Bastos has credited João and Paulo Miyao's competition footage with drawing her toward the berimbolo and named Guilherme and Rafael Mendes as her teachers at Art of Jiu-Jitsu. Her 2026 World Championship run showed her guard-to-back attack in competition: she used a lasso-guard arm drag to take the back and finish the final with a lapel choke, after a semifinal in which she scored from guard before finishing by rear-naked choke. Bastos has said she hopes her career can be an example to athletes who follow her.
