Marcos Escobar

Marcos Escobar switched from architecture to physical education and took his jiu-jitsu teaching from Rio to Malaysia and the US.

Biography

Marcos Escobar is the founder of the MEBJJ Association and a teacher whose career has connected Brazil, Malaysia and the United States. His current biography identifies him as program director, head coach and co-owner of Everyone Jiu-Jitsu's Miami and Cooper City schools, and records a sixth-degree black-belt promotion from Leonardo Castello Branco in 2024. The teaching career began alongside a change of university studies from architecture to physical education. In a February 2024 Graciemag interview, Escobar recalled the encounter that first made him curious about jiu-jitsu. While play-wrestling with a friend on a beach during carnival around 1993, he was caught in a choke from behind and decided to learn the unfamiliar art. A friend recommended two schools in Rio. He chose Castello Branco's newly opened academy in Laranjeiras because it was closer to home, dating his formal start there to 1994. His academy autobiography places his blue belt in 1995, when he began assisting his teacher and changed his university course. Purple followed in 1997 and brown in 1998. By 1999, he was teaching students of his own at a dojo in Rio's suburbs. He recalled early training and competition alongside people including Leo Vieira, Marcelo Garcia and Rodrigo Comprido Medeiros. BJJ Heroes records a brown-belt bronze at the 1999 Pan American Championship and his black belt from Castello Branco in December 2000. He completed his physical-education degree at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2001, combining personal training with jiu-jitsu classes. Competition and an injury interruption then changed the rhythm of his work. Escobar won the separate Arabic-origin tournament held alongside the 2001 ADCC competition. In his autobiography, he recalled a motorcycle accident after returning from that event, lengthy rehabilitation and a gradual return to the mat in 2002 while concentrating on physical education and fitness work. He moved to São Paulo for work in 2003 and continued training with Vieira. In 2005, Escobar moved to Kuala Lumpur and began teaching, initially at Crush MMA Center. His own account of the Malaysian years describes building connections beyond the initial groups. In 2008, he and student Raul Tapia III organized a camp taught by Escobar, Chico Mendes and Cristiano Carvalho. He saw it as a way to make the group known and connect with students outside Kuala Lumpur. He dates opening his own school with students' help to 2009, with the MEBJJ Association developing afterward. The students' accounts add detail to those beginnings. In a February 2012 interview, Lim Fang Han recalled joining Escobar with others after their previous instructor moved away. The group was small, including Aaron Goh and Kenneth Lam; by 2012, Fang saw a larger pool of experienced partners helping beginners progress. He also recalled an August 2009 self-defense seminar persuading his girlfriend to try a class. She continued training and went on to compete regionally. Goh described finding Escobar's small class while searching for fundamentals. He eventually left the car-customization business to co-own Leverage with his instructor. MMA brought another period of change. Escobar described joining André Pederneiras's Nova União after signing with ONE in 2011. A contemporary report records him submitting Rodrigo Praxedes with a choke in the third round at ONE's June 23, 2012 event in Kuala Lumpur. In his own account, he returned to Brazil after his debut to be closer to family. A 2014 stay in California, visiting academies and competing, led him to decide to return to jiu-jitsu full-time. Comprido helped him move with his family to Chicago in 2017. The following year, the two became partners in a school in Lake County, Illinois. Competition also produced age-group results during that period. Representing Brasa CTA, Escobar won the Master 3 black-belt medium-heavy division and took open-class bronze at the 2017 IBJJF World Master Championship. He also won Master 3 black-belt medium-heavy at that year's World No-Gi Championship. After running the Illinois school for a year, he moved to Weston, Florida. In the 2024 interview, he described rebuilding the Miami and Cooper City schools after the pandemic, emphasizing a structured approach, attention to children and the needs of individual students. His published instruction gives concrete examples of that work. A 2020 home-tutorial introduction with his daughter Julia presented retaining mount, the top position straddling an opponent, under the children's teaching label slicing the pizza. The academy's accompanying text says the exercise is used in both children's and adult programs. A written 2022 Graciemag lesson followed a more technical sequence. Escobar took a collar grip from side control, a top position beside the opponent, then moved to knee-on-belly. When his partner pushed on the knee, he closed the distance, turned the partner and stepped a leg over the head to finish a choke. The explanation connects one position with the partner's response and the next attack. Looking back on an old match with BJ Penn in 2024, Escobar also reflected on how differently an encounter could live in memory. He said that watching its video years later revealed a sequence unlike the one he had remembered. He recalled the bout as part of a lasting friendship with Penn.
