Luiz Firmino

Brazilian BJJ black belt Luiz “Buscapé” Firmino won the CFA lightweight title and competed across PRIDE, WSOF, and PFL.

Biography

Born on 18 March 1982 in Paraíba, Brazil, Luiz Firmino de Carvalho Júnior was eighteen when he fought three times at WVC 10. Better known as Buscapé, the Brazilian mixed martial artist is also a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. On 27 May 2000, Firmino stopped Reginaldo Santana, defeated Sergei Bytchkov by decision, and then went thirty minutes with Eli Soares in the final before losing another decision. The night is an early marker in a professional route that, by January 2016, had included M-1, Shooto, PRIDE, DREAM, and World Series of Fighting. One of Firmino's clearest championship results came in January 2013. Training with the Blackzilians and Zé Mario Sperry, he defeated Luis Palomino by unanimous decision to win the CFA lightweight title. After a brief run on *The Ultimate Fighter* that Firmino said included a victory, World Series of Fighting offered him a new contract. Before a short-notice bout with Caros Fodor, he described a direct plan: take the initiative, pursue takedowns, and attack rather than wait. At WSOF 34, Firmino challenged Justin Gaethje for the lightweight title in the main event; the bout ended by doctor stoppage before round four. His official PFL profile later records him against Will Brooks and Rashid Magomedov during the 2018 lightweight season and lists a career record of 20 wins and 10 losses. The documented arc runs from three fights in one night to title bouts and season-based competition—three distinct formats across nearly two decades.
