Lionel Bareiro

In May 2026, Lionel Bareiro outlined a goal of bringing international BJJ opportunities to athletes at home.

Biography

In February 2023, Lionel Bareiro, Paraguay's Brazilian jiu-jitsu federation president, invited the public to support local competitors ahead of an SND qualifier. Divisions covered women and men, from children through masters age groups. In a May 2026 interview with InfoNegocios, Bareiro described a more frequent competitive circuit: one or two tournaments monthly across Asunción and the interior, compared with one every two months the previous year. He reported federation software registering athletes and displaying national rankings and divisions by belt and weight. Competition, in his account, could be amateur or professional. He described children's grappling as play and saw international success as encouragement for newcomers. Later that May, La Tribuna described the federation's institutional and commercial alliances. The aim he described was to widen international opportunities for athletes in their own country.
