Kristján Gunnar Óskarsson

A Húsavík BJJ coach bringing newcomers onto the mats.

Biography

Kristján Gunnar Óskarsson taught BJJ in Húsavík. A psychologist, he returned after studies and work elsewhere. To train together, the coaches bought mats in late 2020. They founded the section in February 2021, offering introductory courses and Saturday open mats to try techniques or watch. Vikublaðið’s November 2022 report placed him alongside Andri Dan Traustason and Ólafur Ármann Sigurðsson at the town’s CrossFit facility. Six-week introductions preceded regular training four times weekly; he had seven years’ BJJ experience. A 2024 interview described volunteers expanding mat space. A small, close community welcomed respectful people; white-to-purple belts complicated class planning. In 2024 he received a brown belt. That September, classes opened for school years 7–10.
