Kon Hui Quek

Kon Hui Quek progressed from informal training with friends to World Pro success and teaching alongside work and family in Singapore.

Biography

Kon Hui Quek came to Brazilian jiu-jitsu after kung fu and competitive judo. Watching Royce Gracie’s UFC performances made him question his earlier training. In his February 2018 interview on Gracie Barra Singapore’s website, he recalled practising informally with friends in open spaces, learning from internet material, videotapes and later DVDs. He persuaded judo friends to spend more time on ne-waza, or ground fighting, outside their normal classes. Around 2011, graduate study took the Singaporean practitioner to the United States, where he trained at Ralph Gracie’s school in California. At the 2013 IBJJF Pan, he won bronze for Gracie Elite Team in the men’s Master 2 brown-belt medium-heavyweight division, listed at 188.6 lb. His 2015 Abu Dhabi World Pro gold came in the men’s Master 2 brown-belt 75 kg division. Looking back in the school interview, he called the event defining for the preparation and team experience as well as the medal. He credited Bruno Amorim’s competition training and personal commitment, and said he found the same structure after settling at Gracie Barra Singapore. The academy dates his black belt to 2015, after that brown-belt victory. By the 2018 interview, he was also teaching when possible alongside a finance job, his own training and family life. He credited support from family and work partners with making the combination possible. That year, a school notice identified him as a member of Singapore’s national jujitsu team and announced that he would lead its 9 August gi open mat, an informal training session in the traditional jacket. His later black-belt competition results included gold at the 2017 IBJJF Pan Pacific Championship, silver at the 2018 Manila International Open and silver at the 2019 Pan Pacific Championship. All three were in the men’s Master 3 black-belt middleweight division, listed at 82.3 kg, representing Gracie Barra. The Singapore academy’s current roster lists him as a resident black belt.
