Khamzat Chimaev

A Chechen-born wrestler who learned jiu-jitsu at Allstars in Stockholm and received his black belt on the night he won the UFC middleweight title.

Biography

Khamzat Chimaev took up jiu-jitsu in the gi only after years of wrestling, and his belts were reported in step with his rise in the UFC. He was born in Gvardeyskoye, in Russia's Chechen Republic, on 1 May 1994 and began wrestling there at the age of five. In 2013, at 18, he moved to Sweden, where he wrestled for several clubs, BK Athén among them, and won the Swedish national freestyle title three times. He was 23 when he started MMA training at Allstars Training Center in Stockholm, a gym that gives 2013 as its founding year and teaches both BJJ and wrestling. Alexander Gustafsson, Ilir Latifi and Reza Madadi were among the fighters he trained with there. After three amateur bouts between September 2017 and April 2018, he turned professional on 26 May 2018. Wikipedia places him with the Allstars team from 2017 to 2023. In October 2020 BJJ Eastern Europe (BJJEE) reported that he had only recently begun gi training at Allstars and that his instructor, Alan "Finfou" Nascimento, judged him ready for a blue belt. A BJJEE piece from April 2022 instead puts that promotion in the previous year, so the exact year is unclear. When Sherdog interviewed Nascimento in March 2022, it described the coach as a Checkmat black belt and gave Chimaev's rank at the time as blue. That interview, given before the Gilbert Burns fight, shows the coaching side. Nascimento said his biggest problem was getting Chimaev to train less, spoke warmly of the work with Darren Till, and said many strong jiu-jitsu players in Sweden had come to help with the sparring. Chimaev, quoted by BJJEE, said Nascimento had promised him a purple belt if he submitted Burns, and added that his coach had beaten Burns three or four times in competition. At UFC 273 on 9 April 2022 Chimaev won by unanimous decision instead, in a bout named Fight of the Night. The next promotion on record is brown. Elite Sports, the blog of a jiu-jitsu gear retailer, reported it on 23 October 2023, two days after he beat former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman by majority decision at UFC 294. At UFC 308 on 26 October 2024 he submitted Robert Whittaker with a face crank in the first round. On 16 August 2025 at UFC 319 in Chicago, Chimaev took the UFC middleweight title from Dricus du Plessis by unanimous decision. According to BJJEE, Nascimento then stepped into the cage and tied a black belt around his waist. Wikipedia's entry, which lists his rank as black belt under Nascimento, cites that report. At the press conference after the fight, Chimaev said he was grateful to his coach for giving him the black belt. Chimaev lost the title to Sean Strickland by split decision at UFC 328 on 9 May 2026.
