João Paulo Oliveira da Silva Marques

João “Jones” Oliveira returned to jiu-jitsu under Paulo Maurício Strauch, then combined competition with teaching children and adults.

Biography

João “Jones” Oliveira’s first period in jiu-jitsu ended when his teacher closed the academy. Born in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro, in 1980, he had started capoeira at twelve and then tried Muay Thai. BJJ Heroes attributes his departure from Muay Thai to hard sparring without protective equipment. In 1994 he began jiu-jitsu with João Luiz “Frango”, a former Ricardo De La Riva student. After two years, Frango stopped coaching, and Oliveira paused his training until 2002. He returned under Paulo Maurício Strauch, who promoted him from blue through black belt. BJJ Heroes connects his renewed enthusiasm and regular competition with later responsibility for the competition team and teaching at Vila Militar in Copacabana. It identifies closed guard and the butterfly sweep as preferences in his game. Its results summary records blue-belt Rolls Gracie Cup gold in 2005, Master brown-belt Copa América gold in 2010 and brown-belt Alfa Barra gold in 2011. His own sporting CV also records an earlier win: adult blue-belt lightweight at the second stage of the 2004 state series. His teaching extended beyond the competition team. BJJ Heroes describes his Vila Militar work as a social project. The historical timetable in his own CV sets out separate children’s and adult classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the children training first. The same CV records previous teaching at the Brazilian Army’s physical-education school. He described his aims as passing on his teacher’s knowledge, improving quality of life and preparing competitors. Oliveira also helped organise opportunities to compete. A 2011 invitation for the fourth Copa Strauch named him and Ricardo Néri as organisers, with Strauch supervising. The proposed format paired athletes by age, weight and belt, followed CBJJ rules and offered medals to all participants. His CV records organising the Copa Strauch again in 2014. At black belt, his CV lists the 2013 FJJ-Rio state title in Master medium-heavyweight. The IBJJF results for that year’s Brazilian No-Gi Championship record silver for Strauch JJ in Master 1 black-belt medium-heavyweight, up to 85.5 kilograms. He later won that age, belt and weight division at the CBJJP World No Gi on June 27, 2015, ahead of Fernando Walter and Antonio Alberto Carmona. His own CV also lists a CBJJP Brasileiro title in Master black-belt medium-heavyweight that year. The CV records a further teaching engagement in 2015, a seminar at Ari Fight. CBJJ’s public certified-black-belt register continues to list him with Strauch JJ.
