Ilia Topuria

Former two-division UFC champion who started jiu-jitsu at 15 with the Argentine Climent brothers at their gym in Alicante, Spain.

Biography

Ilia Topuria, known in the cage as El Matador, won UFC titles in two weight classes after learning his jiu-jitsu at Climent Club in Alicante, Spain. Born in Halle, Germany, in 1997, he came to jiu-jitsu from wrestling, and according to Wikipedia he holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the Argentine brothers Jorge and Agustín Climent. Topuria spent part of his childhood in Georgia, where he took up Greco-Roman wrestling at a local school from the age of seven. After the Russo-Georgian War the family relocated to Alicante, and at 15 he started jiu-jitsu at the Climent gym. The gym had its own origin story. Jorge Climent has told interviewers that he and Agustín left Argentina for Alicante in 2002, after the country's economic collapse, with almost no money, and that Agustín was the first of the two to take up jiu-jitsu. Jorge says he later rented premises and opened the club the brothers were still running in 2024, and that its first five years drew roughly 40 to 50 members. A 2023 El Mundo feature describes the brothers fitting out an empty unit themselves, with no institutional backing. In Jorge's account, Spain then had only two known black belts, no federation and no championships, and with few competitions to enter, the brothers began organising events themselves and held championships inside their own gym; he calls the pair pioneers. Jorge also tells how the Topuria brothers, Ilia and Aleksandre, found their way in. A Cuban black belt from the club met the family on a bus and sent them to the gym. The Climents tested the two teenagers, who brought wrestling but no jiu-jitsu, and coached them for a year while they learned Spanish; after that, he says, the boys said they wanted to do mixed martial arts full time. Jorge recalls that Agustín rolled with the newcomers using only his legs and still finished them, which left an impression. He calls both brothers dedicated and obsessive and Ilia very analytical, and the club as a family in which he and Agustín are the parents. On the competition mat, Wikipedia credits Topuria with a silver medal in the juniors category at the IBJJF European 2014 tournament, and records that in May 2018 he and his brother Alex became the first Georgian black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. His professional MMA career opened on the Spanish regional circuit in 2015 with four consecutive wins by submission, and on 5 November 2016 in Valencia he took the vacant Mix Fight Events featherweight title. His first bout abroad, at CAGE 43 in Helsinki on 28 April 2018, ended in the first round when he caught Mika Hämäläinen in a guillotine choke. In 2019 he won both of his fights for Brave Combat Federation, one by submission in Bogotá and one by knockout in Bahrain. Topuria entered the UFC on short notice in October 2020, replacing Seung Woo Choi, and beat Youssef Zalal on a unanimous decision. Wikipedia describes him arriving with a solid jiu-jitsu foundation and then developing a stand-up game built largely on boxing under experienced coaches; fellow Georgian Merab Dvalishvili, who has trained with him, is quoted praising his wrestling and jiu-jitsu. The grappling stayed visible: at UFC 282 on 10 December 2022 he submitted Bryce Mitchell with an arm-triangle choke in the second round, a win that earned Performance of the Night. For his title fight against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298, SportsRush reports, the team trained at its own gym instead of using the UFC Performance Center in Las Vegas, training three times a day while visiting fans interrupted sessions. On 17 February 2024 in Anaheim, Topuria knocked Volkanovski out in the second round to become UFC featherweight champion, ending a reign of four years. He defended the belt on 26 October 2024 at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi with a third-round knockout of Max Holloway, according to Wikipedia the first time Holloway had been knocked out. In February 2025 it was announced that Topuria would give up the featherweight title and move up to lightweight, with UFC president Dana White reported as pointing to the strain of making weight. On 28 June 2025 at UFC 317 in Las Vegas he knocked out Charles Oliveira in the first round to take the vacant lightweight title, becoming the tenth multi-division champion in UFC history. He lost that title to Justin Gaethje on 14 June 2026 at UFC Freedom 250 in Washington, D.C., when his corner stopped the fight at the end of the fourth round. It was his first defeat in mixed martial arts. His team listing changed in 2025: Climent Club is given for 2012 to 2025 and Topuria Team from 2025, with Alicante still his base. The UFC athlete page names Team Topuria as his gym, Brazilian jiu-jitsu as his fighting style, and a record of 17 wins and one loss that includes eight submissions and seven knockouts. He holds Georgian and Spanish nationality, the Spanish citizenship granted in March 2024, and that same month the President of Georgia presented him with the Order of Honor in Tbilisi.
