Heydan Bucknell

Heydan Bucknell brought a judo background to co-founding AxisNZ, where he teaches children and adults and develops instructors alongside him.

Biography

Heydan Bucknell is head instructor of Axis BJJ New Zealand, with a grappling background that includes competitive judo. He took senior men's under-90-kilogram bronze at the 2006 South Island Judo Championships in Christchurch and silver in the same division at the 2008 Canterbury Judo Open. His connection with fellow instructor Trevor Johnstone began through Morganti jiu-jitsu. In the school's own account of its history, the pair founded AxisNZ in Christchurch in September 2010. The New Zealand academy forms part of the Axis association established in Tokyo by Takamasa Watanabe. Bucknell received his BJJ black belt from Watanabe, who trained under Rickson Gracie. The current AxisNZ roster lists Bucknell as a second-degree black belt. In his first-person profile for the school, Bucknell describes technical complexity and the freedom for personal expression as attractions of jiu-jitsu. He identifies restoring physical balance as a challenge, while the community and continuing room for growth keep him returning. Rolling, or live grappling, gives him a sense of flow that he says carries into life beyond training. He also returns to the Axis headquarters in Tokyo to develop his own practice. The New Zealand school describes maintaining that connection through visiting black-belt seminars in Christchurch and student trips to Tokyo. Alongside its Christchurch base, it lists satellite clubs in Kaiapoi and Rolleston. Bucknell teaches children with Johnstone in the academy's Bullysafe program. Its instruction includes de-escalation and positional restraint, with children grouped by age and experience. He also teaches All Levels sessions in the gi, the jiu-jitsu jacket and trousers, combining fundamental work with more detailed technique for experienced practitioners. An earlier student account shows how learning at the school felt from the other side of class. As a white belt, Zacariah Bell credited instruction from Bucknell, Johnstone and their teammates with helping him feel regular technical progress. Bell now appears on the academy's roster as a purple-belt instructor responsible for no-gi classes. Johnstone holds his black belt under Bucknell and continues teaching alongside him.
