Herbert Burns

“The Blaze”

Source: ufc.com

Brazilian third-degree black belt from Niterói. IBJJF no-gi gold in 2018, eight of eleven MMA wins by submission, now teaching at his own Florida academy.

Biography

Herbert Burns is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at third degree, awarded under Rafael "Fofitio" Barros and under his older brother Gilbert Burns. He was born Herbert Mitchell Pontes Burns on 2 February 1988 in Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro state, and has competed under the nickname "The Blaze". A Brazilian, he moved to Florida in 2017 and runs his own academy there today. He and his brothers all started jiu-jitsu at the same time; he was ten — an origin he gave the same way himself in a newspaper interview in 2014. Both of his older brothers, Gilbert and Frederick, are black belts too. Before the mats there had been football, and Shotokan karate taught by his father, Herbert Sr., in which he won a state championship. Competing began almost at once: his first outing came a month after he started entering tournaments, a mixed division for yellow and white belts, and he finished second. A month later he was in a national championship, and by his own account he has not stopped competing since. In 2013, with a single professional fight to his name, he signed with ONE Championship and won his first five bouts for the promotion inside two years. He did most of his training in those years in Asia; he set about finding a new camp base after the September 2015 win over Timofey Nastyukhin. A year earlier, in Dubai, a reporter had asked him what his main weapon was. "I'm a grappler," he said, and left the subject there. The move to Florida came in May 2017, to Combat Club, where Gilbert was already based. Describing the staff he was walking into, he set out who did what — Greg Jones on the wrestling, his brother on the jiu-jitsu — and said he meant to stay active in jiu-jitsu alongside the cage career. The Way Martial Arts has been his listed team since 2022. Before that the record shows Kill Cliff FC from 2017, and, earlier still, Evolve MMA between 2013 and 2015. Sherdog files him under Kill Cliff FC to this day; the UFC's own page gives Sanford MMA. Then came a stretch with nothing in a cage. A report from December 2018 describes the twelve months before it as spent entering grappling and gi tournaments across the United States rather than fighting. Representing Brazil at black belt, he won gold at middleweight at the American National No-Gi Championship. At the Pan No-Gi Championship, held in New York, he finished third at -76 kg. Two golds came at a single event, the Dallas Fall Open No-Gi Championship: the middleweight division at black belt, and the open-weight absolute. His medal record carries a further gold at -76 kg from the Miami Spring Open No-Gi Championship, though the year is disputed: the table dates it to 2018, while the IBJJF results page cited for that very row is headed 2017. FloGrappling's results database holds four matches for him, all from that season, two won and two lost. On 30 March, competing at 160 lb, he beat R. Semiglia by calf slicer at Fight 2 Win Pro 68 — the one finish the database records for him in pure grappling — and in October he took a decision over J. Gracia at Fight 2 Win Pro 89. L. Valente beat him on points on 28 June in the lightweight division of the 2018 American National IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship. That is the gi event, a separate tournament from the no-gi championship of nearly the same name where he took gold. The database covers only 2018 for him, and not every row in it is set out here; four recorded matches describe what it holds rather than everything he entered. The cage record reads much like a jiu-jitsu record. Eleven professional wins: eight by submission, two by decision, one by knockout — a split that appears the same way in Sherdog's database and on the promoter's own statistics page. The promoter's athlete page files his gym as Sanford MMA and his fighting style, simply, as jiu-jitsu. His professional debut, on 25 February 2012, lasted twenty-five seconds and ended in a triangle armbar; he later said both of his first two bouts had come on short notice — three days for one of them, in Brazil, and five for the MMA debut. What carried him into the UFC was also a submission. On 6 August 2019, on the Contender Series, he caught Darrick Minner in a triangle in the first round, at 2:29, and left with a contract. The promoter's Brazilian desk had set the bout up as a test of his jiu-jitsu black belt, against a man with nineteen submission wins, and he said afterwards that opponents normally keep away from the floor with him, which was exactly why this one appealed. Later that year he said his level had always been good, and that he had faced hard opponents and beaten them with his jiu-jitsu; the ambition he described was one he shared with his brother, to carry the family banner and to represent Brazil and jiu-jitsu in the UFC. His UFC debut followed on 25 January 2020 against Nate Landwehr, won by knockout in the first round and rewarded with a Performance of the Night bonus. It remains the only knockout win on his record. He did not fight after August 2020. A knee ligament injury needed surgery, and the long layoff went into something he had wanted for years: a school of his own. The Way Martial Arts opened in the week before 28 March 2022, in Lantana, Florida, founded with Joe Cianciotto, offering jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and fitness, and framed as somewhere parents and children could train in the same room. Teaching was not new to him. He said he takes the professional team at Sanford MMA, that he had taught the professionals at Evolve before that, and that he has taught in Brazil and in other countries across Asia and Europe. At his own academy, he said, he would train jiu-jitsu himself and teach mainly in the evenings. A report on 10 October 2024 said he was no longer on the UFC roster, and the promoter's athlete page now lists his status as "Not Fighting". His last recorded outing was at Fury Pro Grappling 11 on 2 November 2024, against Pat Sabatini; the match went to overtime and he lost on golden score. It was a grappling match, not a cage fight.
