Guilherme Cascon Martins

Guilherme Cascon Martins moved from basketball and endurance sports to jiu-jitsu, training under Carlos Henrique through black belt.

Biography

Guilherme Cascon Martins came to jiu-jitsu after a decade of basketball and participation in marathons and triathlons. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1966, he began training at 24. BJJ Heroes’ biography describes a practical reason for the change: after becoming a father, he wanted a sport he could practise closer to home. Friends were already training jiu-jitsu. Carlos Henrique became his first coach and remained his teacher through black belt. Along the way, Cascon competed in the coloured-belt ranks. The 1997 Brazilian Nationals archive lists “Guilherme Cascou,” representing Carlos Henrique, as the winner of Master 1 blue-belt featherweight. The reference biography also credits Cascon with victory at the 1997 Niterói City Cup and a runner-up finish at the 1999 Rio state championships, without specifying those divisions. It lists a brown-belt master title at the 2004 Rolls Gracie Cup and identifies closed guard as his preferred position. Henrique promoted Cascon to black belt on November 5, 2008. At the 2011 Brazilian Nationals, Guilherme Cascon Martins earned bronze in the men’s Master 3 black-belt featherweight division, representing Brazil021.
