Edwin Najmi

Edwin Najmi turned an aggressive, finish-seeking style into 2016 Pan gold and World Championship silver in his first full black-belt season.

Biography

Edwin Najmi received his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from Rômulo Barral in 2015. Born in 1992 in Tarzana, California, he followed that promotion with Pan gold and World Championship silver during his first complete black-belt season in 2016. The available account of Najmi's early progression and 2016 record relies largely on BJJ Heroes. Its profile says that, after about a year of judo and submission-wrestling training, he joined Barral's Gracie Barra affiliate in 2009 to focus on ground fighting. Barral awarded him his black belt on May 30, 2015, after Najmi won the brown-belt world title. In 2016, Najmi won the Pan Championship and took silver at the World Championship. The recorded Pan final ended with Najmi submitting Francisco Iturralde by Estima lock. Najmi has described his flying triangle as an instinctive answer to a failed two-handed collar drag: when his training partner postured up, Najmi jumped into the attack. In the same interview, he credited wrestling work under Jacob Harman at Church Boyz as an important addition to his submission-grappling preparation and framed his competitive approach around pressure and pursuing the finish. Before the 2019 ADCC World Championship, Najmi said he entered his first fully structured tournament camp, training alongside Barral, Gabriel Arges and Keenan Cornelius. That account captures a specific 2019 preparation period, not a current team or competitive role.
