David Kama

David Kama’s documented path from training under Rickson Gracie in the 1980s to Kama Jiu-Jitsu’s 2012 transition.

Biography

BJJ Heroes and Jitsmagazine each describe David Kama as having trained under Rickson Gracie in the 1980s. BJJ Heroes places his promotion by Gracie in 1995, while also cautioning that it could not establish exact promotion dates for several nearby entries in its Dirty Dozen chronology. Those accounts also say that Kama ran one of Rickson Gracie’s affiliate academies for many years before opening Kama Jiu-Jitsu. A 2023 Gracie Honolulu seminar notice described Jack Taufer as a third-degree black belt under Kama. Kama Jiu-Jitsu’s own site gives a specific later transition: in 2012, it says, the former Rickson Gracie Laguna Niguel academy was renamed and established as Kama Jiu-Jitsu Academy. The site frames the school around sharing Rickson Gracie’s “Invisible Jiu-Jitsu” as a self-defense system. Its youth-program descriptions likewise put self-defense concepts before later submissions and striking.
