Dai Carter

After finishing a manuscript, Dai Carter set himself a new goal in BJJ: a black belt.

Biography

After finishing a book manuscript, Dai Carter set himself another challenge: a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Nieuwe Revu met him after training in May 2023. Martial arts had been part of his life since fifteen, he explained. Alongside television, theatre and family commitments, he was finding brief moments to pause and reflect. His account describes military training from 2006, ten years in the Korps Commandotroepen and leaving in mid-2019 for new challenges. He shares his experiences through television, books, theatre and training. His advertised 2.5-hour team masterclass addresses attention, pressure and mission mindset. His Volt publishing imprint presents physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual components, including communicating feelings, purpose and reflection. A written 2025 Men's Health podcast introduction described BJJ and Hyrox training as ways he kept mentally sharp, alongside recovery, vulnerability and responsibility. In the accompanying interview, overwork became feedback: noticing when his focus on the mission displaced self-care, slowing down and reconsidering priorities. He described checking what needed attention. BJJ also featured in a November 2025 announcement of his collaboration with EGJJF. Public-service professionals were offered a free training month at participating schools. The federation's own initiative page specified affiliated schools teaching Combat Defense and welcomed a friend or acquaintance. By July 2026, he was describing a practical change to Grazia: pausing theatre despite the lost income, making room for rest and family. His five weekly training sessions combined strength, conditioning, BJJ and running. He also spoke of learning to recognize and express emotions. Training remained part of his routine while he reconsidered how much work to take on.
