Casey Jones

His Crewe gym grew from local teaching, student support and a shared building effort.

Biography

By March 2009, Casey Jones was Shrewsbury head coach and Karl Tanswell’s student. His 2010 reflection credited his questioning outlook to his sociology lecturer and Richard Dawkins, recalling resistant sparring with a former kickboxer before finding a university BJJ coach. He linked positions, rules and defence with match study, instructor questions and partner tests. Learning outweighed gym wins; his guard-pull defeat prompted standing work. That emphasis on learning also shaped his account of an American trip in SBG’s retrospective of 2013. Despite losing his opening Worlds match, he valued what he learned, thanking Tanswell, Manchester training partners and Matt Thornton’s Portland gym for preparation and support. Shropshire Live’s 2018 feature described two years coaching children for Palmsports in Abu Dhabi. Opening new Shrewsbury premises, Jones called wider access a longstanding aim and offered women and children free classes until Christmas. Beginner Nia Lewis described welcoming classes and an approachable coach. Undated SBG testimonials praise detailed progression exercises (Nuno Matos) and continued learning (Jason Tan). In May 2023, Jones and Shaun Hampton opened their jointly owned SBG Crewe gym. Crewe Nub News traced the project to more than two years of local teaching and a growing student base. Students and Rogers Renovations helped create the premises. Jones wanted a community where different generations could train together, connected with Crewe’s wider fitness scene rather than replacing existing businesses.
