Bobby Woodman

Aparna Verma described how Bobby Woodman adapted coaching to the skills she could develop.

Biography

Bobby Woodman valued seeing beginners understand daily lessons and apply them. In 2019, Elite’s Whitehorse co-owner and coach was focusing young first-time competitors for an April Anchorage tournament. That March, he took no-gi gold and gi silver at the Tiger Balm Internationals, describing a smaller advanced field than the novice groups. Eight Days Martial Arts traces his interest in martial arts to watching early UFC events. Its biography describes a Saskatchewan-born, Yukon-raised practitioner who started in Can-Ryu Jiu Jitsu and also trained Muay Thai, MMA, no-gi and BJJ. It credits Shawn Albrecht with his BJJ black belt and reports a first-degree promotion by Brian J. Johnson in October 2026. Sport Yukon named him its 2023 Coach of the Year. Its account described over forty teaching hours across six days weekly alongside running Eight Days, and recorded the team’s fourteen gi and no-gi medals in British Columbia that October. Kickboxer Aparna Verma offered a more individual view of his coaching in 2023. She praised his patience and described how they concentrated on skills she could develop, while preparing defenses against actions she found difficult. Eight Days also identifies Woodman as its BJJ teacher. The school describes gi fundamentals, practiced in the grappling jacket, with optional sparring afterwards. A separate drilling session lets students bring a position or sequence they want to improve. They repeat it and work through problems, making their own training questions the starting point for practice.
