Ben Royle

Ben Royle turned a Phuket teaching opportunity into a lasting coaching career, alongside MMA competition and Phuket Grappling Academy.

Biography

Ben Royle grew up in Gorton, Manchester, playing football and following Manchester City. Martial arts initially held little appeal. In his 2021 account for ONE Championship, he recalled friends taking him to Hyde MMA despite his reluctance to hit or be hit. Grappling drew him toward Factory BJJ. At nineteen he returned to MMA with ASW Manchester, but struggled to train consistently. Before pursuing martial arts full-time, Royle completed a degree in Social Care and worked in learning-disability services alongside studying and training. Introducing himself to HeadStart International School in 2020, he dated his start in MMA and Brazilian jiu-jitsu to fifteen, with coaching beginning a few years later. His work with students would become a substantial part of his life in Thailand. After injury and a break from regular training, he travelled there in May 2016 seeking change. A training scholarship encouraged him to return in September; he sold possessions to pay for the flights. Free training still left accommodation and food to cover. As money ran out, he sometimes stayed on friends' couches. An offer to teach BJJ provided income and a way to remain in Phuket. His first coaching responsibility there was a children's programme, followed by work with adults. In the HeadStart introduction, he described seeing students develop as people as well as athletes as a particularly rewarding way of giving back. That November, the school introduced him as its new BJJ after-school coach for the coming terms. His account placed the satisfaction of teaching alongside his own professional ambitions. Royle won his ONE debut against Quitin Thomas by third-round TKO in 2020. He recalled the win bonus as vital when the pandemic reduced Phuket's martial-arts tourism. By 2021, he described fighting as a way to test his development and enjoy martial arts. His return that year ended in a first-round knockout loss to Purev Otgonjargal. In November 2023 he defeated Ivan Parshikov by unanimous decision. A first-round rear-naked-choke victory over Jeong Won Wi at Top Brights followed in January 2024, before a second-round TKO loss to Akbarjon Islomboev at UAE Warriors 55 that October. Phuket Grappling Academy developed alongside that competitive career. According to its own history, it began during the pandemic in 2021 as a private space for children's classes and friends to train. Demand turned the project into a full-time gym, with affordability for island residents part of its purpose. The academy cites the Daisy Fresh series as an influence on its original small blue-room environment. It reports winning the team trophy at the first ADCC Thailand event in late 2022, then moving out of the original 60-square-metre room in January 2023. As the academy's head coach and a BJJ black belt, Royle teaches within a programme offering adult no-gi grappling and wrestling, together with children's gi, no-gi and wrestling classes. The gi is the traditional training uniform; no-gi training uses sportswear. An introductory course offers twelve semi-private lessons to prepare beginners for regular groups. His publicly listed classes show specific positions taught through both attack and defence. Front-headlock work, controlling an opponent's head from the front, includes escapes, guillotine defence and D'Arce finishes. Other lessons cover off-balancing and entries from single-leg-X, attacks and defence from K-guard, and ways to pass an opponent's guard. These are connected subjects in the academy's published curriculum, with work on entering positions accompanied by ways to respond when an opponent uses them.
