Arnaldo Alves

Arnaldo “Pitbull” Alves co-founded Brazilian Power Team in Portugal and taught future academy leaders across Europe.

Biography

Arnaldo “Pitbull” Alves helped establish Brazilian Power Team in Portugal alongside Marcelo Bernardo and Marcello Rosa. The Brazilian teacher is listed among the team’s black belts by the Portuguese jiu-jitsu federation. BPT’s Odivelas academy traces his teaching lineage through Jairo Moura, placing Alves between Moura and his own pupil Denis Araújo. Their teaching in Portugal predates BPT’s reported foundation in the early 2000s. Sara Fonseca’s academy biography dates her first training with Rosa, Alves and Bernardo to 2000. Her own teaching career later took her to Barcelona in 2009 and, in 2022, to opening White 2 Black Academy in Arizona with Italo Nunes. Daniel Riou began learning with Alves and Bernardo in 2005 at a small gym near his hometown. In a 2017 interview, he credited both teachers for his black belt and described his work leading BPT’s Estoril affiliate. By January 2012, Notícias de Cascais was reporting a team that had grown from classes in Lisbon to ten academies and around 400 practitioners. Its account included Riou’s Estoril school. Alves, then described as having practised jiu-jitsu for roughly two decades, was looking forward to the sport’s further expansion. One of the relationships developed in Portugal led to teaching in Romania. Mircea Cubleșan had first encountered Brazilian jiu-jitsu through Sergio Vita in Lisbon in 2003. He subsequently trained under Alves at BPT. A February 2013 report from Cluj described Alves teaching and assessing students there; the host explained that Cubleșan’s earlier Portuguese training relationship had made the visit possible. Among those assessed was Viorel Staicu, who received his purple belt. Recalling the examination, Staicu described endurance exercises and five minutes of sparring with Alves to test his level. For Staicu, the experience showed how adding technique could improve his fighting. By the time of a July 2015 portrait, Cubleșan held a black belt awarded by Alves. Back in Cluj, Cubleșan had developed his own BPT academy and opened Iris Power Gym with some of his students. Nuno Martins followed another route to Alves’s classes. After a period with Reinaldo Ribeiro, he joined BPT and received his black belt from Alves in 2015. Martins then chose to leave his work as an airline pilot and move to São Paulo to train with Marco Barbosa. Alves also continued visiting the team’s Portuguese schools. The Alta de Lisboa affiliate recorded a class with him on 18 October 2017. A later announcement connected that teaching work with support for a teammate: a fundraiser created in January 2025 advertised a seminar with Alves at Araújo’s Odivelas academy on January 11. The €20 participation fee was intended to help an injured team member. Odivelas dates its own establishment under Araújo to 2005, as a branch of the team founded by Alves, Rosa and Bernardo. Its current presentation identifies Araújo as its technical director and Alves’s pupil, teaching children as well as competitors.
