Argyris Argyrides

Argyris “Sensei” Argyrides developed his jiu-jitsu through study and travel, then built lasting teaching relationships in Cyprus.

Biography

Argyris Argyrides, known as Sensei, teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Espira in Limassol. His sporting background extends beyond the mats. The academy's biography describes early gymnastics and decathlon, followed by taekwondo, Shotokan karate and wrestling. He reached first dan in karate. It also records years of work as a VIP bodyguard and teaching combat jiu-jitsu to British and Cypriot military personnel. A visiting practitioner's 2013 Art of BJJ account traces his interest in BJJ to military training in 1998. Despite fifteen years of karate, he was caught in a choke by his instructor without understanding how it worked. He wanted to learn more. His brother in the United States sent books and VHS tapes, while he studied with friends and continued learning techniques from the military instructor. Seeking direct instruction, he visited Braulio Estima's Gracie Barra academy in Birmingham in 2005. That meeting developed into an ongoing connection: Estima followed the Cyprus academy's progress and visited regularly. By the time of the 2013 report, he had awarded Argyrides his black belt. The visitor also described women moving from self-defence classes into mixed training, a developing children's class, and students travelling to European competitions while welcoming visiting practitioners to the island. Teaching visitors produced exchanges between disciplines. On March 17, 2016, Argyrides led a BJJ session for a Royal Engineers judo tour in Cyprus. The participants' diary describes taking elements of his instruction into their judo practice. He continued competing himself, earning bronze in the men's Master 4 black-belt middleweight division at the 2018 IBJJF European Championship. One teaching relationship continued well beyond a first visit. Gerry Coghlan received his blue belt from Argyrides in 2018 and later returned to train. In June 2023, Coghlan organised a British Army Jiu Jitsu team camp at the Limassol gym. Speaking to Phileleftheros, Argyrides described a decade of cooperation with British base personnel and welcomed their interest in the training. His pride in Coghlan's development concerned more than technical progress: he highlighted his student's hard work, discipline, respect and friendly approach. The academy now presents itself as Espira Jiu Jitsu. Its stated philosophy emphasises sustained effort, learning with others and improving personally rather than comparing oneself with someone else. The fundamentals class concentrates on basic fighting principles and core BJJ movements. Its method page describes how classes fit into a broader progression: coordinated curricula connect with practical drills, attendance and belt development. Rather than treating each class as an isolated collection of techniques, the published programme links what students learn with continued practice and progression through subsequent training levels.
