Andy Travis

Andy Travis began BJJ at thirty-seven, founded Advance in Jakarta and developed classes for beginners alongside police and MMA coaching.

Biography

Andy Travis leads Advance BJJ and Fitness in Meruya, West Jakarta. He began Brazilian jiu-jitsu at thirty-seven, after an earlier career in karate and fitness coaching. Building his own school has involved adapting that experience to different students: children, adult beginners, competitors, police officers and an MMA athlete preparing with several coaching teams. In the career account published by Advance, Travis dates his first karate training to 1980 and his karate black belt to 1993. He went on to run and coach a club in his home town. In 1995, he became a fitness and nutrition coach and worked in personal training. After an extended break from martial arts, he returned through MMA and BJJ. His BJJ training began in the United Kingdom in 2011 with Paul Rice, within Lucio Sergio dos Santos's organization. He progressed through brown belt there. Advance's biography describes him competing regularly between 2012 and 2016, at events in London and around Manchester. The later black belt he earned in BJJ followed a separate path from his earlier karate grading. Travis arrived in Jakarta in July 2019 and trained and coached at de Been 100% Jiu Jitsu. He subsequently opened Advance, which dates its establishment in West Jakarta to June 2020. His explanation of the name connects advancing with progress, looking ahead and setting goals and challenges. The school's published curriculum separates toddlers' and children's programs from adult beginners' classes, intermediate training and sparring. It sets out a place for students who want to compete as well as those pursuing long-term recreational practice. Another practical concern is language. In guidance addressed to Indonesian newcomers worried about classes taught in English, the school explains that Indonesian members can help and that visual demonstrations accompany the instruction. Showing a movement gives students another way to follow what is being taught. Teaching also extended beyond the academy's regular classes. Advance reports that it began training the Jakarta police's ResMob division in October 2020 after being approached to provide jiu-jitsu instruction. That November, an Antara report named Travis among those helping Rahul Pinem prepare his wrestling and BJJ for a One Pride MMA bout. The account, attributed to HBrothers owner and coach Marlaut Farhan Hutapea, also identified Caio Terra BJJ Indonesia, Argonauts Wrestling and Linson Simanjuntak as contributors to the preparation. Advance formally affiliated with de Been 100% Jiu Jitsu in August 2021, and Peter de Been awarded Travis his BJJ black belt in May 2022. His academy describes entering the 2024 IBJJF Asian Championship as a return to competition. Competing as Andrew David Travis for de Been 100% Jiu-Jitsu, he won the men's Master 5 black-belt heavyweight division. In 2025, Travis and Advance changed affiliation to Gracie Barra Indonesia and Equipe Titan. The school's explanation emphasizes working more closely with locally based colleagues and developing its students, with support from Alisson Braga and Bruno Amorim. Gracie Barra Indonesia's current instructor roster identifies Travis as Advance's head coach and a BJJ black belt.
