Greek fighter "The Spartan", a self-described Gracie Barra Greece black belt who took a UFC debut on about ten days' notice in 2020 while based in Greece.

Biography

Andreas Michailidis, known as "The Spartan", is a Greek mixed martial artist who made his UFC debut in 2020 while still based in Greece. In his UFC athlete profile he describes himself as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Gracie Barra Greece and says he has won several European BJJ championships. Born in 1988, he started wrestling and kickboxing at Malios Team at the age of eight, according to Wikipedia, which adds that he later took up MMA and jiu-jitsu at Gracie Barra Greece. His UFC profile also mentions Greek kickboxing titles and a wrestling background. Manos Navrozidis, a Greek fight-sports specialist quoted by Contra.gr, said Michailidis first made his name on the ground and only later built up his striking, through hard work at EFL Martial Arts Academy and in the United States. He turned professional in 2009, and his first listed fight, in Athens that May, ended in a first-round TKO win. Contra.gr reported that he had worked with coach Dimitris Papakonstantinou since 2013. According to Wikipedia, he won a European Fight League light heavyweight title and then traveled to the United States to train with Antonio McKee and Quinton Jackson, and in June 2014 he won a King of the Cage bout by side choke in the first round. Later that year he lost to Jason Butcher at Bellator 128. Wins in Grozny in 2015 and over Ion Pascu in Abu Dhabi in 2016 followed; Contra.gr reported that the UFC had been watching him since the Pascu fight. He took the Cage Survivor middleweight title in Athens in December 2017 and stopped Marcel Fortuna in the first round at Titan FC 54 in April 2019. The route into the UFC came on short notice. A Cage Warriors middleweight title fight planned for April 2020 fell through when the event was canceled, and he said a Contender Series bout had been lined up for September. Then, in July 2020, Vinicius Moreira withdrew from a fight with Modestas Bukauskas, and Michailidis took the bout about ten days out, one division above his usual middleweight. Contra.gr reported a four-fight contract. In an interview with BJPenn.com he called himself the second Greece-born athlete in the UFC and the first to get there from Greece without moving abroad; the earlier one, named by the interviewer, was Anthony Christodoulou. He said he trained daily at EFL MMA, with camps at the Allstars Training Center in Sweden. He lost the debut by TKO. His UFC run continued with a unanimous-decision win over KB Bhullar in May 2021, followed by a TKO loss to Alex Pereira that November and a decision loss to Rinat Fakhretdinov in June 2022, after which he was no longer on the roster. In 2023 he entered the Oktagon MMA welterweight tournament. He outpointed Leandro Silva, submitted Marcel Grabinski with an arm-triangle choke and stopped Louis Glismann in the first round, then lost the final to Bojan Veličković by rear-naked choke in the third round that December. His record shows later losses to Piotr Wawrzyniak by split decision in July 2024 and to Mark Hulme by guillotine choke in February 2025.
