Amatha Ratsombath

Amatha “Paul” Ratsombath moved from Paris to Laos, developed his filmmaking craft and taught jiu-jitsu with BJJ Laos Team Infinity.

Biography

Amatha “Paul” Ratsombath is a filmmaker and jiu-jitsu instructor whose work developed in Laos after a move from Paris. His school, BJJ Laos Team Infinity, describes him as a practitioner of BJJ and MMA since 2005 and a black belt under David Pierre-Louis. BJJ Asia identifies him as the Vientiane academy's head instructor. The personal biography published in the 2017 Asiadoc catalogue traces his move to family roots. Born in Paris to parents who had migrated from Laos, he wanted to discover the country of his parents and understand himself beyond the life he had known in France. He moved to Laos in 2009. Anousone Sirisackda hired him at Lao Art Media, initially in IT management. Moving into project management gave him the opportunity to learn filmmaking through the work itself. Two years later he joined Anysay Keola's crew on At the Horizon. The original crew subsequently formed Lao New Wave Cinema. His contributions spread across several parts of production. In a 2016 interview, colleague Xaisongkham Induangchanthy named Ratsombath among the Lao New Wave Cinema team and described him writing, directing, editing and recording sound. Alongside that work, he taught dance classes. The following year's Asiadoc entry described him as a self-taught cameraman and director of photography. It also presented his documentary project Badass Girly Warrior, following a young woman's ambitions in kickboxing, as still in development. His martial-arts teaching connected him with David Pierre-Louis and Infinity in France, the relationship identified in BJJ Laos's AJP club profile. The written introduction to SEA4's July 2023 episode on Ratsombath describes him leading the Lao national jiu-jitsu team at that year's SEA Games in Cambodia. The producers presented his aim as raising the international profile of Lao martial arts. BJJ Laos's present biography describes that national-team head-coaching role as a former position.
