Almir Kapic

Almir Kapić is a Bosnian BJJ black belt and BJJ Arena Sarajevo leader who built a long competition career from a small local training room.

Biography

Almir Kapić is a Bosnia and Herzegovina Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and the person in charge of BJJ Arena Sarajevo. He began jiu-jitsu in 2011, helped establish the academy two years later, and developed a competition career alongside work as a coach and tournament organizer. Banovići, study, and Sarajevo Kapić was born on 2 May 1980 in Banovići, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He grew up there during the Bosnian war. His education also included extended Quran study. An official 2023 decision records that Kapić memorized the Quran before Sheikh Abdul-Hadi Muhammad Shafiq Muswati in Syria and received the corresponding recitation qualification on 2 May 2008. The Rijaset of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina formally recognized that qualification on 13 April 2023. Before jiu-jitsu, Kapić participated in several sports as an amateur. A preserved 2014 interview says he took up kickboxing after moving to Sarajevo, then paused training while pursuing his studies. He has said that this earlier participation gave him the physical base he brought to Brazilian jiu-jitsu when he started in 2011. Building BJJ Arena In 2013, Kapić helped found BJJ Arena with Edin Nuković and Maid Pajević. The young academy established an international affiliation, and its 2014 interview identified Peter Schira as its coach. Schira visited Sarajevo roughly every six months to teach seminars, giving the local group recurring contact with an instructor from outside Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kapić's competitive results soon placed that academy in wider events. At the 2016 Abu Dhabi World Professional competition, Klix reported that he represented Bosnia and Herzegovina, won the open category, where competitors are not separated by weight, and placed second in the category above 94 kilograms. Preparing through interruption Kapić gave a more detailed account of his preparation for the 2018 Abu Dhabi title. He said that training began in December but was interrupted by unspecified health difficulties. His preparation then alternated training with rest and included reducing his weight to make the 110-kilogram category. By 2019, Kapić was competing at black belt. Representing BJJ Arena at the NAGA European Grappling Championship in Amstelveen, he won the gi division above 114 kilograms and received both the gold medal and the championship belt. A gi is the jacket and trousers used in traditional jiu-jitsu competition. Coaching and organizing at home Kapić and BJJ Arena organized their first Sarajevo Open in 2021. The event drew several hundred participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries, and Kapić said the academy then had about one hundred members. He described the competition as a way to revive regional activity after the pandemic and motivate children to train. He also presented jiu-jitsu as a practice for physical and mental health across age groups. In 2023, Kapić described BJJ Arena as teaching children and adults, preparing competitors, and offering recreational sessions. The program also maintained dedicated training opportunities for girls and women. The current AJP Tour club directory identifies him as the person in charge of the Sarajevo academy. Kapić remained active in international competition in 2024. At the AJP Tour Split International, he represented Frota Academy in the professional black-belt 120-kilogram division. He won his semifinal 4–1 and the final 7–6 to take gold.
