Allen Solomon Chong

Allen Solomon Chong combined architecture, coaching and competition while building BJJ clubs, youth support and grappling events in Sabah.

Biography

Allen Solomon Chong learned taekwondo from his father during his school years, then took up karate. Studying architecture at Deakin University in Australia brought him to Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Will in Geelong. Wallace’s 2015 Warriors.asia profile describes the curiosity behind that move: watching UFC footage had made him want to understand grappling and submissions. The Malaysian Institute of Architects’ Sabah graduate-member directory records his BA in Architecture from Deakin. After returning to Kota Kinabalu, Chong and friends formed BJJ Borneo, training at YMCA Damai in 2008. He went on to establish Alpha MMA and help form the Sabah BJJ Association. Coaching and organising developed alongside his own competition career. In 2013, he won MIMMA’s amateur lightweight final against Shammah Chandran by armbar. That November, the UFC named him among the featherweight cast of The Ultimate Fighter China. His recorded professional debut followed in 2014: a split-decision win over Arnel Lomibao at Ultimate Beatdown 15. The association developed the Borneo Headhunters grappling competition before taking on the larger Sabah Open project. The 2015 event was scheduled for 22–23 August at Likas Indoor Stadium as part of the Sabah Fitness Festival. At the time, Chong worked in architecture by day and coached at Alpha MMA at night, with his wife helping run the gym and organise the event. Alpha’s youth programme supported young competitors’ travel and brought visiting coaches to Sabah. Competition continued to demand adjustments. In 2016, after a planned ONE Silat event was postponed, Chong accepted a short-notice match at Hex Fight Series 6. He lost to Aidan Aguilera, then recorded a win over Joven Superales at Jesselton Fight League later that year. A guillotine submission over Jhunior Acilo Diapolet at Singapore Fighting Championship 5 followed in 2017. Sherdog’s professional ledger records three wins and five losses through March 2018. Asked about results in his 2016 Pan Asian interview, Chong put the difficulty of a competitor’s path and personal growth ahead of medal totals alone. He valued what an athlete had overcome to reach a podium. For him, the association’s practical role included financial help and flight tickets, but the less visible coaching work mattered too: staying after training to help beginners solve problems. He wanted more regular opportunities to compete and better referee training, drawing on experienced coaches outside Sabah. His ambition for younger athletes was that they would surpass what his generation had achieved.
